Haha... yes well it's US after all. Instructions say to torque in manufacturer's sequence and then immediately provides a sequence diagram...presumably for where there is no known manufacturer' sequence... but it doesn't say that.

I am confident 100 ft lbs is correct provided the ARP moly lube is used on fine thread washer and nut. I think Pedro had 100 ft lbs used on his. Cheers

This is odd....found a reference to the kit being for use with composite gaskets but there is nothing in the instructions to say that...

Can anyone tell us why different gasket compounds would change a head tension figure?

Maybe because different compounds probably have different tensiles. Some might crush down more than others. A tin gasket can't squash down more that the metal allows, multi shims probably have a different torque down as there is an airspace between each layer. Composite s are made of a material that might bed down/compress on torque.

The recommended tension for this kit in the instructions is 100 pounds so that would be the highest I could imagine ARP prescribing for any gasket. It's a lot of force over the 10 studs. Whether MLS or composite I will determine tomorrow when I straight edge and feeler gauge the block. Cheers

Double check that it is 100 pounds or 70 pounds

Here is the link to ARP Website with the kit you bought
The Official ARP Web Site | Kits

If you click on the instructions link you get the instructions which are dated REV 1 DEC 2016 (see bottom of page)
    [ame]http://arpinstructions.com/instructions/157-4301.pdf[/ame]

    This doc says:

    TORQUE PROCEDURE
    9.
Following the manufacturers recommended torque sequence, shown below, torque the nuts per steps 1-4
    1- Tighten nuts 1 through 10 to 25 ft-lbs
    2- Tighten nuts 1 through 10 to 50 ft-lbs
    3- Tighten nuts 1 through 10 to 70 ft-lbs

So it goes up to 70 pounds with step 3 but the pdf instructions says there are 4 steps so is the last step to 100 pounds? -

The paper instructions with the stud kit says 100 pounds but have they changed it since the kit has been sitting on the sellers shelf - confusing.

When I did mine I went to the 100 pounds and one stud pulled out of the head at about 90 pounds and I had to get the hole repaired - use a long nut-sert not a helicoil and there are not enough threads on a helicoil to hold - the cast aluminium in the head fails. Look how long the threads are on the stud versus the number of threads on a helicoil.

My engine builder said 70 pounds was OK for a RV8 and I went to about 75 (or was it 80) and that was the advice on a number of forums.

So you need to make up your own mind - I emailed ARP and whether 100 was too high and they did not respond.

    Garry
