Thread: TD5 ceramic coated manifold - should the heat shield go back on ontop?

Heat shields usually protect hands for touching the ultra hot surfaces and getting very severe burns, even though a heat shield is very hot it self and you will get burnt, that's why there is that thin piece of steel over the turbo, so skin skin doesn't stick to the turbo if you were to accidentally touch it.

Logic would suggest that the EGT would be higher with a ceramic coated manifold, as particularly if the inside is coated then the gases would be insulated and retain heat rather than dissipate it through the manifold.

However great if you find a decrease!

Remember the reason to ceramic coat is to decrease the temperature of the manifold so it doesn't warp so much which implies insulating the gas so retaining its heat .

I know my EGTs are pretty high with the ceramic manifold , but now controlled with a Serck intercooler and rarely reach 700C.

I have replaced my heat shield as I have a 2nd battery in my 2002 TD5 . (see photo in What you did to D2 thread.) I don't think you would scratch the coating. I don't think I have scratched mine. In any case the inside coating is probably more important than the outside, as this is what will insulate the gases.

I have changed the mounting system on mine by connecting the mounts to the manifold full time and placing Rivnuts on the other end of the brackets and putting bolts through the heat shield, to make it MUCH easier to remove and refit.

On other logic that extra heat would increase turbo speed at the same rpm so higher boost at the same driver demand = lower EGT... as the benefits of turbo blankets

Out of interest: where is your EGT probe located?

I left the heat shield off mine once, set the bonnet sound proofing on fire!!

I soon put it back on.

Prior to fitment I had exhaust gas leaking around number 5 and when I removed the turbo there were signs of exhaust gas leaking between the turbo and dump pipe. Perhaps these leaks were partly causing the higher post fitment EGT. Either way the EGT is much lower now which I like.

Already have a Serck intercooler from TD5 Alive/Alive Tuning fitted.

I have just removed mine from this location as I didn't like it so close to the turbo charger, wanted the real estate for the fitment of a Provent 200 and have a new dual battery tray for the other side.

I refitted the heat shield yesterday.
