In unrelated news I had to replace the thermister in mine recently as the condensor was icing up.

An AC compressor is something I wouldn't source second hand unless it's on a system running and cooling and you can see it.
Anything that is off the car and has only taped up service ports or worse, open, I'd give a wide berth.

Pretty sure Darren at Aztec 4 x 4 in Rivervale still has some from his 3 x D2 s he is wrecking. I bought one off him 6 months ago for $100 I think and working fine. Needed regassing etc of course and he has a local guy who does that for him.

Why would a Tech thread be in Forum Rules and Guidelines? Maybe someone needs to move it to the right area.

My D2 has done 160k kms.

I managed to get hold of a good second hand one in running condition.

Yes, its a bit of a roll of the dice to buy second hand, but I'll run the risk in the hope I don't have to pay over $1,000 for a new unit.

Are you sure it is the AC compressor making the noise?
If you do not have ACE their is an idler pully not too far from the AC compressor, the bearings in them can fail also.
