Yes, but it's a how long is a piece of string question.
People have broken d2 axles doing nothing much and slunnie ran twin locked on 34"JT2s and didn't snap anything until he was being silly.
But absolutely there's a real possibility you can snap axles with a locker even taking care. When you combine a locked diff with larger tyres and harder terrain, the odds start to stack up against you.
Pretty sure Rangieman runs stronger axles with his rear locker.
To be honest I'd put Ashcroft axles and CVs in with ATBs but that's because I like spending money ATB Diffs

ATBs offer a cheap and effective traction aid for probably 80-90% of the driving people do in D2s, even if only to remove a weak link from the drivetrain.
For the 10-20% who want to go beyond what others drive then absolutely, a fully locking differential will offer much better control off-road and get you through the tougher spots, but in those cases both the type of driving you're doing and the mods required go beyond the locker itself. I wouldn't want to run a locker on standard D2 axles, whereas I'd be comfortable running an ATB on them.
And I am aware that anything an ATB will improve off-road a positive locker will probably do better
But for people who want to do a little bit better without the need for full lockers or the want for the expense of them ATB Diffs
So the 80 to 90 % are going to go home with their tail between their leg`s as soon as some girl says oh its all too hard im scared
Well i must only go out with 10 to 20 % of real drivers as no one on the trips i have done has backed out and gone home
How many times have you been on a trip and done something that you should not have or have seen a novice or someone with experience attempt something which you all knew would not end well
Now on the locker front you dont have to be hard core to have them .
To me positive lockers are the way to go in my opinion it is that easy
Yes i have hytuff axles Ashcroft rear pegged C/WP rear and a Air leaker in the front oh and i have a uni rear shaft Why Im not into rock hopping mud slinging and im only on 32" tyres
I like stronger that dont go snap crackle pop like standard rover crap oh and i like the positive locking diffs that i can control when and where to use

I agree with rangie man. Just recently doing some tracks around lithgow i didnt struggle over anything except a rock step i couldnt clear, simply needed more clearance.
With both elockers and my centre atb locked i crawl over everything. If i cant crawl i give it some and im over 95% of obstacles. The blokes without lockers chew up the tracks, drive hard, and abuse their vehicles. These guys are more likely to do damage than i am.
In saying that my drivetrain (everything) is all ashcroft, except my rear hytuff axels.

So Hytuff is the way to go in the rear and Ashcroft half shafts in the front. Where did you get the Hytuff gear? Easy to fit the HE gear? There was one bloke on here who fitted Aschcroft fronts and had problems with sealing the oil in. Don't know if he resolved that or not.

    Cheers

With sealing oil, do you mean that the front seal was leaking from the ashcroft diff

No from the seals but I see that they are advertising a new CV seal to suit their CV.

This is turning into a circular argument ATB DiffsATBs are good and cheap and have their advantages, positive locking diffs are a better traction aid but also an expensive exercise. If you're happy and you know it....

And ATB's plus TC are 90%+ towards full lockers in ability.
A nice, liveable compromise for the average off roader/tourer that helps and enhances driveability in normal day to day bitumen and gravel as well as needing no input from the driver to activate.
