I have been scouring Carsales etc & I have a couple of questions for the D2 experts.

Why do some have a step thing on the back?
What is the button on the R/H side of the dash that looks like a highway under a bridge?
    What is a "Classic"?
Do the all have worn boots on the hand brake & range selector?
    Is this replaceable?
Do they all have worn steering wheels?
Do the upper tail lights work?
Did they come standard with a tow bar like the D3?

There are quite a few out there & the prices vary wildly & do not seem to relate to what you get.
I have only found a couple of manuals & if possible I would prefer one in QLD (not have to drive back from Sid's Knee which would be a bit of a trial.
    The search goes on!!

BTW Any decent D3 be it petrol or otherwise is up around the $20 grand which is over budget.

I’m no expert but have owned a D2. Here is what I know...

I think that the step was an option - mine didn’t have it.

The button - activates cruise control.

All the D2’s that I have seen have worn steering wheels, gators - they are getting oldish.

Pretty sure that you can get replacements.

There is a D2 - Series I and Series II.

The Series II had an upgrade to the front lights.

I think that the Classic only came out in the Series II.

I think that the Series II is the one to go for - try and get one with the CDL.

Pretty sure the step came with the seven seaters. Mine no longer has the rear seats, but the step is still handy. My steering wheel is not worn, 300,000ks.

    * As already said, rear step for entry to the rear seats.
    * cruise control on/off switch. I like it's always on position design(when you set it to on) as I'm a heavy use of cruise control .. most other cars have those temporary on/off switches that need to be switched back on again after every shutdown(which I hate).
    * I'm pretty sure a Classic is the D2a .. marketing guff from LR. If I remember right, the RR up until that point was only the RR, not RRC. it was when the P38A came out that what we all knew as the RR, suddenly became the RRC.(or something else to that effect).
    * Pretty much. Not too expensive to change, and 'relatively' easy to do too.
    * Pretty much. 3 here and all worn at the tops. Whether this is from over use of one handedness, or possibly UV exposure .. or both. My D1 had the same worn issue(I replaced with an old leather 'sports' wheel, as my D1 doesn't have airbags. if it's only just starting to wear the wheel, it seems to rapidly decline from that point on. No idea on what a quick and easy fix is tho.
    * my upper tailgate lights didn't work, so I attacked them with lots of CRC and a good cleanout. Strange design when you pull 'em apart. the entire unit comes out from the face side, then multiple small screws hold the rear metal section to the lens section.
about a month or so ago, my brothers had no brake lights. I immediately thought brake light switch. Pulled one from the parts car, replaced .. still no brake lights! tracked wiring from here to there and back a few times .. all seemingly good!
After an hour or so .. thought to check the bulbs themselves(doh!) .. what's the chances Anyhow .. actual tailight bulbs were both good, but needed a high mount bulb .. high mount now working, but still no tailight brake light bulbs(note that tailights were working).
Attack of the CRC part II on the metal part(as per with my D2) .. and at one point I got a flicker of light. more CRC, removal and replacement of bulb .. and finally all working again. Why? No idea, but I suspect just slightly dodgy (brake light)bulb sockets.

Most I've seen have towbars fitted. Actually, every single one I've seen or gone to see, or had bookmarked on a sales site have towbars .. more common than not. if it doesn't have one, I think they're common enough to find a S/H one(I even have one, maybe for sale one day).

All I know with respect to ride comfort, it's going to be whatever you want it too be.
My brother's is super comfy,. no idea on what springs/shocks a previous owner installed, but it's very nice over any road surface I've been with it. My D1 is harder(hard springs and shocks).
My 'parts D2' had (old model)Mini rock hard suspension. Parts D2 was driven back on a temp reg issue, just to get it home. All freeway, basically smooth stuff.
Whatever idiot decided to use the no name YELLOW shocks it has, they must have immediately sold it to someone that then killed the motor(head gasket) from who I got it from. Harder ride than most gokarts I've played with!
No idea on the brand of shocks .. but they've totally killed the ride.
So ride comfort is what you want it to be.

In terms of space/room comfort, I think the manual seated models have less room than the electric seated models. I find the D2 more cramped in terms of legroom compared to the D1!!
Both brothers and my Part car have not only less room, but also shorter seat bases.
Note that I'm particularly sensitive to legroom seat base comfort due to my bung knee. My D2, with electric seats on the other hand is far more comfy than the D2, and my D1. Only problem is that it's not moving fore/aft(yet) .. plus that it's still a project car and not quite yet ready to get reg. I think the additional height adjustment in the electric seat option makes it more comfy.

I made my own range selector and handbrake boot replacements. Took about 2 hours with some grey denim from spotlight, using the perished boots as templates, borrowing my Wife's sewing machine and some superglue and bulldog clips for attaching the range selector boot. Cost about $10 in material and looks schmick. I was quoted $150 by the place that did my seat covers.

My steering wheel is fine, 240 000 kms.

Yep. I killed the ride in mine using too hard springs. If I was keeping it I would reinstate the SLS, as it was much better.

I have the same problem. Leg room for the driver is far better in my D1 than my D2. But, when I borrowed Mario's car with electric seats it was better. Go figure.

One day I'll probably buy another one, and I'll know what to look for.

I'm vertically challenged so seat movement shouldn't be a real problem.
SWMBO must be descended from some group of European micro people, she just puts the seat forward as far as it will go & complains that the pedals are not close enough. I hope an air bag never goes off on her!
