Mate don't for a moment let people tell you that D3 is more comfortable. I have a well set up coiler D2 with Bilstein shocks and love it. I prefer it over the air suspended D3 and it goes around corners quicker despite the 2 inch lift. Go for a HSE (or earlier SE) because the seats are fantastic. Then buy my 16 inch mags that I have for sale or similar and take the 18 inch HSE wheels off and get max offroad ability.
The only place the D3 is better than a well set up D2 is on corrugations at high speed where the independent suspension provides a softer ride. Having said that I put up big day after big day driving on corrugated roads at Cape York earlier in the year in the D2 (with a D3 and D4 along for the ride) and it felt (at GVM) very planted and reliable and I never felt tired after 8-9 hours.
The tuning of the D2 was far ahead of its time. Personally I think the D3 is too harsh given its underpinnings (it should be softer) and I have been in a number including early and late model D3.
Most were indeed auto.
As for running and repair costs I would take a D2 with 200,000k any day over a D3 with the same mileage. Cheers
