    Solved

    TD5 engine bay fusebox (960 x 540).jpg

ok, still had this problem even with immobilizer off.
the wire from the starter solenoid is red/brown, i traced this back to the fuse block in the engine bay,(easier than it sounds) the red/brown wire plugs into a male fitting on the fuse block, the wire obviously has a female plug on it, this connection was loose, so simply squashing the female plug a little and refitting seems to have fixed the problem.
