What was the colour of the smoke?
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

I also noticed loss of coolant. Put in about 1lt of water when I could just see the coolant level then. I should probably consider an engine saver soon.

The EGR is there and I might get rid of it as a future project.

The engine sounds fine but the problem is probably still there.
Loss of coolant is a significant pointer to a head gasket problem when you look at all the issues together.

Not necessarily that scary with the help of this forum.

If that's the case, what is involved in fixing it? New head?

Oil nice and clean or is it milky ? Loss of coolant and grey smoke is pointing to head gasket though....

Once you are comfortable that it is the head or head gasket remove it and get it checked for cracks etc. The old gasket should give some clues as to the cause. If you have some mechanical skills and good tools it's not a hard job if you have a mate to help lift it and a copy of Rave to guide you.

Mention head gasket on the TD5, everyone panics. My disco has 407,000 KMs on it, never had a head gasket problem. Simple things first. Tick off all other reasons for coolant loss before falling for the head gasket syndrome. Take the cap off the coolant reservoir, check for air bubbles coming in with the return flow. How many kms on your vehicle? Is the ECU chipped? Do you have the service history of your vehicle? Have you done much beach work? Beach work is a killer for all unmodified 4x4's. [ ie, upgraded radiator, heavy right foot, etc] Tick all the boxes before you touch one head bolt.

ok. I have the service history since 80,000km. Here is some of the things I've noticed worth mentioning:

    80K- add Coolant 3.5lt
110K- Repair minor leaks at transfer case rear output housing.
    119K- add coolant 3.5lt
    140K - replace fuel regulator
160K - new air springs. new sensor harness rear (ABS?). coolant 3.5lt
176K - new fuel pump. coolant 3lt. trace cause of coolant leak to fuel cooler unit. re-seal refit.
190K- minor crack at rear tailshaft coupling. minor weep at rear diff pinion seal.
200K- fuel leak at R/H/R hub area. new coolant 3.5lt.
201K- rectify cause of fuel leak at rear of vehicle. leak at one fuel hose above fuel tank.
207K - new fuel line and o rings. new fuel hose from reg to front of cylinder head.
237K - replace fuel pressure regulator.
245K- Pressure test cooling system and check coolant leak. Replace hose clamp bottom of expansion tank. add coolant.

The vehicle has 250K on it at the moment. It's pretty much stock so I don't think the ECU is chipped. I've never done any beach driving, and not noticed any rust underbody due to any possible beach driving.

So what do you make of it in the light of the above? Cheers.

Well, at 80k, 3.5 lts added, at 119k 3.5lts added, at 160k 3.5 lts added, at 176k 3,0 lts added, at 200k 3,5lts added, at 245 coolant added. What I make from that is, take your vehicle to another shop. If I had to add 3.5 lts to my coolant, once, I would be looking closely as to why. Or asking questions. Since I sorted my radiator, and hoses, if I add 100 ml of coolant , at any time, it's a rare time. If you indeed have a head gasket problem, I'd say it dates right back to 80K. Take your oil filler cap off, see if pressure comes out . Put your hand over the top, there should be no pressure. Engine running of course. Rev it up.
