So far, i read that oil can follow the wire loom and end up in the connections to the ECU and could cause the problem. I have thoroughly cleaned the connections, reset the fault codes for the 2 lights using Torque and a OBD2 Elm Bluetooth device. This worked for about 5 min then the lights came on again. I have just tried it again and it appears to not be in limp mode but the S and M lights are still flashing. Cant work it out.

    Can anybody help??

Yep, This is exactly why I like older vehicles - no digital confusion - fix everything with a hammer, a shifter and possibly a screwdriver. It may not be as efficient, but you can almost always keep going.

I am with donh54; get the battery load tested. I had the same trouble with my disco 2. Started fine, no sign of battery problems, but after a bit of research I concluded I needed to test the battery tested. The battery test indicated a poor condition although not failed. I changed the battery and the problem went away.

Wink Problem fixed and thank you all (see fix details)

Well guys, it was quite an adventure into the unknown (unknown by me that is). I didn't mention before that not only the S and M lights were on but also The Three Amigos have been present for a while. A member of this club contacted me and told me he could get the codes using his Nanocom. He did and was very very helpful. He spent about 30 min diagnosing and explaining the diagnosis. His knowledge of these Beasties is great and hes a top bloke too. I haven't mentioned which club member as it was a private message and I am not sure if he would want that. BUT, I sure would like to to if he contacts me and says ok.

Ok, lets get down to it. It was all due to a bad earth. A previous owner had put in the wrong size battery (too small) and the wrong battery terminals position. The main battery cables couldn't reach, so he disconnected the 'Earth Connection bracket' that is about 15cm along the earth (negative) cable from where it connects to the battery to make it reach. Also the 'earth bracket jigger' (with three earth connections) that is very close to it is probably where it should be connected (They were all loose also). Until we get another battery, we maintained a solid earth by connecting the 'earth connection bracket' to a spare cable I had complete with lugs to a good earth position. That was yesterday. so far so good. No warning lights at all.

Thank you all for you help and ideas
I will keep you posted if anything eventuates from this fix.

See ya guys and I hope all ya Chooks turn into Emus and lay bloody big eggs for ya Brekky. BFN - Gerry
