D2a Td5 stock performance - am I expecting too much

Looking for a Td5 D2 for my wife, and drove a likely looking 2003 (D2a) model yesterday.
TBH I was quite unimpressed with the performance - it reminded me of the stock standard 300tdi auto D1 I had a few years back!!
VERY soggy off idle and even once the turbo spooled it was lack lustre. Sports mode on the auto improved it in general but obviously didn't help much with getting it up and rolling.
At intersections I had less confidence about pulling out than I do with a couple of ton of trailer/van behind in the county.
I drive my manual bog-stock 300tdi 130 almost daily and jumping back into that after the D2 was like getting in a hatchback performance wise.

Apart from that it was a nice honest stock vehicle and pretty much ticked all the boxes SWMBO wanted. She was fine with it being a slug but I 'm keen to get a bit of a feel for whether its typical and I'm expecting too much, or if there's likely something that needs sorting out on it (I'm thinking turbo/boost related).

Stock they are pretty zippy for a large 4x4, maybe there was a problem with it?? Drive another one!

Or if it's in great condition with full service history and only driven to church on Sunday it can always be remapped, EGR removed and decat to get the best performance.

Very underwhelming stock. My mate had a D1 300tdi that seemed to me to have more grunt off the line. Cheers

My 1st TD5 D2 was, in my view, dangerously sluggish off the mark from new. I couldn't convince the dealer techs that something was wrong but replacing the MAF at around 40K kms gave it the life it should have had.

I drove a couple new. If you wanted to buy a diesel but were not sure, the dealer was always wise to say "...arrr we haven't got a V8 demonstrator at the moment..." because a back to back immediately made you go the V8 unless you were a farmer of liked fob watches and penny farthing races.

Stock it like your driving through jelly all the time. Getting a new tune makes the world of difference though.

They shouldn't be that slow stock. Especially when driving it around normally. I would say there is probably something wrong with it. But a tune certainly makes a big difference to it. If you want to test drive a D2a I have one here. Funnily enough. D2a Td5 stock performance - am I expecting too muchD2a Td5 stock performance - am I expecting too much

Thanks all. Sounds like its performance probably isn't THAT unusual then.
I'm not really looking for a project, but happy to tidy up and tweak a few things if its worthwhile.

SPROVER - is yours stock or has it been remapped?

I have a 130 300tdi big cab and a 2000 Td5 discovery manual. The Td5 definitely has a more go than the 300tdi even tossed up putting a Td5 in the 130 but the electrical nightmare put me off.
I find the Td5 feels like a much larger engine where as the Tdi feels like the 2.5 litres that they both are. The Td5 is completely stock and Tdi has been tuned a little.
The only time the Td5 has felt doughy is when the boost compensator valve was playing up.
