I’m not entirely convinced that fluid will fix my issue. So...I think what I’m going to do is do a 3x fluid change with something a bit cheaper than transmax z. If the issue is still there then I’ve spent hundreds less on fluid and I’ll send the auto in to get rebuilt with HD flexplates and strengthened tc mounts. I had actually talked to A&B about the flexplates and TC mount the other day.

I do have a spare transfer case and a rebuild kit in the shed, so I might start working on that so that if the auto comes out they can fit the rebuilt transfer to it at the same time.

    Auto Trans Issue?

I went to TRS today so I could get someone to physically drive my D2. There’s horrible backlash that I hadn’t noticed because I don’t often drive like an idiot. It’s also slow to go into gear (again I hadn’t noticed it because this is the only LR I’ve driven) and the backlash is quite noticeable when you go from R to D with your foot on the brakes.

I’m going to check the front & rear propshafts but they should be fine. I’m going to rebuild the spare TC that I have in the garage and save up for a auto fix.

Ian gave me a price on a D2a 03 low km box (stronger box from what I understand) that was reasonable and we can upgrade the flexplates and do the rear main seal at the same time.

I think you might find if you investigate that the d2a box is no stronger, I was also told the same thing but I haven't verified it from any reliable source, I'd be asking the aus zf guys if I were you

Isn’t the hp24 out of a D2a? Someone said earlier to rebuild my box with hp24 3rd & 4th gears.

The 24 (in this instance) is out of a v8 d2 , some of the parts are interchangeable, but not all, with the correct skills/tools a 4hp24 can be fitted to a td5.

Go the castrol if you can afford it, the nulon or burson equivelent spec if you cant.

for the rebuild you want a 4hp22 with the 24 internals.

add an extra cooler fit a fan

upgrade the flex plate with the TC when you do it if you go the upgrade..

spec the TC to do what you want it to do when you purchase it if you're going to change it out for non OEM.

I thought that the 24s were only fitted behind 4.6s? RRC/D1s all got hydraulic 22s. D2s all got electronic 22s (except where a 4.6 was fitted - ie. some USA versions). In Aus it was only the 4.6 P38s that got the 24s (electronic). At least that's how I understood it. My 24 is a -061 out of a P38 4.6. Took a while to find that one as I wanted the big torque convertor. Well worth it when you have close on 500Nm from just off idle

    Auto Trans Issue?

    So, what trans is in an 03 D2a, a 22? I’m obviously mistaken in thinking it’s a 24

Everything LandRover with a ZF 4HP transmission came with a 4HP22 variant with the exception of anything that had the 4.6V8. The 4.6V8 only came with the 4HP24. In Australia the 4HP24 came out of the 4.6V8 P38 RangeRover and in the NAS market the last of the D2’s in some cases came with a 4.6V8/ZF 4HP24EH, which in that case I understand they also had a P38 rear diff setup also!

The D2 and the D2a in Australia both had the same 4HP22EH.

That’s all you can fit into the 22 box, the setup on the 24 is longer.
