Get an Td5inside Remap on an NNN ecu and you can tailor it to towing, will make an big difference
Get an Bigger intercooler, turbo and free flowing exhaust and you will be ripping up those hills
After spending 4 days towing a trailer thru hills then on flats into a head wind, i'm looking for more low down torque. As most of the trip was in NSW country it was 100Kmh speed limit, at 100Kmh in Drive TC locked, your only doing ~2300rpm and it doesn't have any grunt, as soon as you see a rise it drops speed and unlocks, in 3rd TC locked you can accelerate past 100. Into the head wind i could only use 3rd TC locked and could only just get to 100. So i'm looking for more power between 2,000 to 3,000rpm what's my options? Is there a towing ECU upgrade aimed around there? I'm not an 80kmh look at the flowers type person.....

I have to say that everything comes at a price.
If you upgrade the ECU a large intercooler is a necessity or your EGTs will go through the roof, and preferably EGR delete. You will need to increase boost somehow to 21Lbs or so to reduce EGTs. I have bypassed my boost controller and use a manual boost controller.
I have a pretty complete upgrade with BAS ecu upgrade on my 2002 which is an EU3, big intercooler etc, and yes I can maintain 100 or even 110 on all but the steepest highway hills towing my 900loaded camper trailer .(EG southbound near Buladelah I can start at the bottom at 110 and still be doing 100 locked at the top). However , if you are baulked by a car passing you and slotting in ahead at the bottom then slowing down then you have little chance of recovering speed without high EGTs.
BUT I have to watch the EGT gauge like a hawk.
I can use cruise control on the flat or on modest hills but the bloody cruise will go flat out if you are losing speed on a big hill and the EGTs go over 700 in the blink of an eye.
BUT I LOVE IT.

I have already deleted the EGR and fitted a catch can and snorkel. I could not monitor the EGT as the probe died on the trip and had to disconnect the gauge which ment i lost the boost gauge as well. Normally get up to 19psi, will trip the alarm at 21 occasionally, but still seems to be controlled by the modulator. This was a once only type trip (Mildura to Grafton and back), "normal" trips are to SA with less long hills. What are the TRS ECU's like as i go near Lonsdale SA often. I'll have to check if it's EU3 but i think it's EU2, what's the difference?

I found that the modulator slowed down boost rise over 15PSI.Normally get up to 19psi, will trip the alarm at 21 occasionally, but still seems to be controlled by the modulator.
My theory is this. By shortening the wastegate rod, the wastegate is prevented from opening fully, so it is theoretically open at 15PSI but the lengthened rod stops it from opening fully so the boost still rises but much slower. I found by cutting the modulator out of the circuit that the boost really rises much faster after 15PSI to the manual cutout.

Edit EU2 has non flashable ECU while EU3 is flashable by Nanocom. EU3 has addition 40?NM torque as stock . EU3 started 2002 .
With my hybrid turbo, and bigger IC I am getting 25psi stable and can boost up too 29psi up hills
It just loves the boost
How much coin do you want to spend?
You can upgrade to the EU3 intercooler from a D2a (or 2002 D2) on the cheap.
2000 D2 yeah? so non flashable ECU - Get an NNN ecu and tune or have yours re chipped, I'd go the NNN and you can adjust as required. info here Discovery 2 MSB to NNN ECU Do you have a Nanocom to upload the tune to the ECU?
Another option for turbo is one of these Uprated Hybrid Billet Turbo CHRA Core 452239- Land Rover Defender Discovery TD5 Turbocharger Cartridge there was a group buy a while ago and you could start a new one? I'd be interested this time around Td5 Uprated turbo core group buy
Happy shopping!!

Yes but I still had high EGTs with my EU3 intercooler. You can upgrade to the EU3 intercooler from a D2a (or 2002 D2) on the cheap.
A Serck intercooler did wonders.

I have an serck intercooler makes all the difference
Buying an hybrid turbo from td5inside is the next best step I have one and its amazing so much better than the hybrid core I had one of those too didn't go much
