Back on topic,i was reading today about the LC V8, 1VD-FTV, apparently the EGR's are used to help keep the engine warm under some conditions.

    I wonder if thats correct?

Could be so, Paul. From the research I've done, it can be used to stabilise temps, heating when cold or cooling under operating conditions.

Apart from the alloy header tank I recently fitted, my car is stock as a rock, no emission and performance increasing mods here.

The previous owner fitted the Steinbauer to our Defender, so my hands are clean. All care and no responsibility!

OK, so if I pay a mechanic to delete my EGR, my hands will be clean both literally and metaphorically, and I won't be responsible for killing 1,000 people a year?

In another thread you explain your plans for running a generator, for air conditioning while camping. You must have a bigger (carbon) footprint than a yowie. All this while pushing the environmental barrow and judging others. Do you see the irony?

The only cooling EGR performs is that by displacing oxygen in the cylinder it reduces combustion temps and hence NOx.

It probably could speed warm up and get emmissions under control a lot faster, too.

You can watch when it's called for on the Nanocom, even at part throttle but relatively high speed/load it can call for a % of EGR.

IT works by allowing the engine to run nearer to the the correct stoichiometric ratio. The closer you get to this the hotter the combustion temperature is (Diesel not petrol they need to lean out a bit but perversely overfuel to compensate for the colder conditions to ensure the fuel lights off and emit more emissions) once you got past it (more fuel than air for the mix) you start getting into pyrolytic combustion which is hotter again but more polluting (soot)

depends on how you want to define side.. Of the planetary crust? yes, of this debate? I dont care I'm on the fence for it as none of this eco-greenippy-warrior crap is applicable to anything I've got or will likely get so I can enjoy my typical position of firing randomly into the fray and not caring where the shots land.

The generator is mainly for charging batteries when remotely camped, but I'm adding capacity for the air-con just because The Navigator reckons its a good idea, and I'm a firm believer in Happy Wife = Happy Life! EGR delete.

I don't think paying someone else to make your vehicle illegal makes any difference to who is responsible, but whatever floats your boat is not my problem, so go for it if you wish.
Of course, you're not personally responsible for killing 1000 people a year - we're all doing our bit to ruin the only planet we have.
