    I'm Confused?

Some time ago the Gear Box temp light came on after a 6 hour drive from Cloncurry & after going through/hitting some water.
Today, finally, I got to have a look at this.
I dropped the ATF with the bung on the pan, ATF was brown, did not look great & only about 2.5lt came out. About 2.5lt went back in.
Refilled, went through gears a few times then went for a short drive. GB Temp light came on again.
Returned to base, dropped ATF again, ATF reddish brown, let drain for 30 minutes. Refilled this time with car running & going back & forth through gears. Took 7.5lt of ATF this time? During refill GB temp light came back on?
I am now letting the car/box cool down, then I will drive around the block (about 7km) & see what happens.
I have used all my 10lt of ATF (I have a couple of 1lt bottles).
I want to ensure the GB is going to be OK, I will have to drive the car 6 hours back to Cloncurry before I can get it properly looked at. No mechanic here & I'm out of ATF.
Do you think it will be OK to drive to the Curry?
BTW Gears change well & smoothly. ATF was only warm (not hot) when dropped the second time although light was on.
How come I only got 2.5lt in the first time but 7.5 the second?

Paul, make sure the ATF is Dex lll, Castrol Transmax ot Penrite are best. I'm probably preaching to the converted, but I'd prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to the type of oil in the ZF auto.
When you drained the sump, did you allow much time for it to drain? Much of the fluid is in the torque converter, it won't drain.
Some mechanics have a pump that they place in line and reverse flush the transmission, when the fluid comes out clean, the entire system has new fluid and the filter has been back flushed.
Regarding the temperature light, ignore it, it will go away, it's just moisture in the electrical side. I could induce mine to go out with heavy acceleration. It will persist for a while, becoming less frequent until dry.

    Something has gone horribly wrong!!
Just went for a 7k drive.
On return the whole underside of the car from the ATF pan back is covered in ATF fluid!
    Not happy.
So, I guess, it's on a truck to Mt Isa to get fixed. Money I don't really have right now but will have to work it out.
I think I will give up trying to do stuff myself.

Do you know if the engine has to be running to check the level? If the engine shouldn't be running then you probably have overfilled it.

Have you disturbed the coolant lines, inadvertently?
Have you unknowingly spilled fluid doing the refill?
It's got to be something simple or minor.
Sit down, have a coffee and settle, then go and have another look.
It's just too coincidental to have a major hemorrhage less than 10 kilometers after a fluid change.

    You are probably correct.
Just totally Um, looking for the right word, I got one but can't write it here.
I have decided to degrease the underside of the car tomorrow then see if I can find where all the ATF came from.
I will order more ATF tomorrow but it takes 2 weeks to get here.
Like you say, it's probably some pipe/tube come off somewhere. I will see if I can find something by Wednesday when I have to decide if it goes on the truck.
Feeling pretty ****ed Off & down right now.

The engine must be running or you'll chronically underfill the trans.
Cycle through the gears including reverse while filling, and when the fluid is running freely out of the fill hole reseal it.
And the car must be level.

For that strange behaviour of the temp warning you have to replace the temp switch first to be ruled out, then if it still does it you'll have to find where the wire from it is chaffed and touches earth

What Ian said Paul, it'll be something simple.
Hopefully you haven't lost the fill plug!! I'm Confused?I'm Confused?I'm Confused?
