Hi guys,
thought I'd post this quick comparison of the disco using CDL and TC vs CDL and Front, CDL and Rear. This is loose slate rocks so its quite slippery and cross axel articulation. (Difficult to tell from the video)
I've had the lockers (Air in front and electronic in rear) now for a couple of months. Done a couple of trips and blown away by the difference.
There is always plenty of positive comments around traction control, however you can see the difference.
I can go so much slower up difficult tracks.
These are cheap Chinese brands, and so far so good. drop oil, everything looks good so far. finger crossed.
The question is if you could only afford either front or rear what would you go with. Playing around with only a single locker front definitely gets me over things smother. however the steering pulls straight which i don't like.
When looking up at tough track i normally just turn on the rear before it slips, haven't need both yet.
Where the front I've had to turn on when I'm stuck. so different approaches.
So if you do any off-roading, please consider a locker either front or rear
Cheers
Slunnie

Another that doesn't know how to drive a Land Rover.
Yes you can make them look **** if you do it wrong. Keep on the throttle and don't back off like this Dick Head does. Let the TC do its thing.
I think in this video they just want to make it look bad.

On a recent QLD trip the difference in TC between models was quite apparent, the D2 needed lots of revs before TC kicked in but the D3 would work at very low revs,

I noticed that as well, with the D4,it is light years ahead of the TC system in the D2.
And for those with the Puma, the later models TC,was also better than the earlier ones.
My sons 76 is also interesting, it has F&R lockers, and TC,but as far as we can tell so far, the TC system isn't the greatest at all, thats why it needs lockers, which are a factory fit.The LC200 has a much better TC system, no lockers.
A couple of other factors.
That was a D2A and the traction control I understand is less active than a D2 with added CDL.
Hell mine even activates going down a Kerb.
Second, the action of TC depends on the brake pads fitted.
Stock type brake pads such as TRW/Lucas will be far more effective than ones that take time to heat up like many aftermarket ones which D2 owners like to fit.
I am happy to stick with my TC.
It pulled me out of wombat holes on the southern exit of the Murray crossing at Tom Groggin with two wheels off the deck, slowly I grant. And that was with wet discs.
I reckon that with torque biassing diffs it would be even better.
And I know what lockers are like as I had a Detroit in my 77RRC and a Maxi drive rear and Quaife front in my 91.
The main down with lockers is the inevitable broken axles when both wheels spin and then grab.

I think your missing the point, as i stated its about driving it slower and more controlled up a hill. Any half wit can bounce there way up a hill.
Taking offensive to this reference, I can assure you I wheel my disco. I did the the same test every time. Just different camera angles. Im not trying to make it look bad just simply showing as direct comparison. You can clearly see the TC tries and fails a number of time. I have driven this track several times all with out lockers and yes you need throttle and speed because of the angle and slate underneath. If this hill was dirt not a problem, TC would of worked fine. However its about showing you the difference
What I though you might of noticed is how much better the truck is with only a single locker and TC. Depending on your driving i dont think 2 lockers are required just a single with TC.
Was it in low in that first attempt? For the TC to work well uphill the transfer box should be in low to overcome the braking activity of the TC and you must not play with the throttle too much just keep the revs steady at around 2200rpm as to be efficient. Introducing axial lockers will always enhance any vehicle's behaviour off road but IMO if you know how to drive it the D2 with central diff locked and the facelift SLABS ECU is good enough as it is but never better than with lockers. The gist is that on the axle with locker TC is actually absent
Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
Thanks for sharing Troy - will be interesting to see how those Chinese Lockers go over time.
Ignore the Trolls - they seem to come out a lot at this time of year.
