For those interested in what is required with the replacement GCU and the taking out of the board and in this case using a board rather than the wires

BMW N57 8hp to TD5 Auto adapter kit

MJ Products in Hallam VIC have probably the best prices for genuine ZF oils in Australia.

The best value for the ZF8 is the 20L container for $715 which given you probably don’t know the full the history of the gearbox means you can give it a double flush.

    They also have 8 x 1L bottles for $330.

They do sell on eBay but prices are higher compared to buying direct from them.

I note they also sell a non-genuine oil as well for a lot less - namely the Royal Syntrans LV for the ZF6/8 at $189 for 20L.

A popular oil for the ZF6 is Penrite BMV ATF which also claims is fully compatible with the ZF8. There have been no reported problems using this in the ZF6. That oil costs less than $15/L.

Very interesting and thanks. They are good prices and would have saved me, not much but still saved me and would be happy to buy here in Aus as a preference.

Funny today I hear of legal action against Google re the algorithms being manipulated to make cheap alternatives to Amazon and other major players become magically invisible. For any search will literally go down at least 8 pages as I did here and the best price I got was considerably cheaper than alternatives, but still this is better!!

Was talking to an owner of Xr6 Turbo who is a needing a 6HP trans service and he was being quoted over $8oo for it, there has to be a saving here...

Unbelievable, both the oil and the thermostat arrived from the States yesterday...

Got a reply to a question I sent last week regarding the supports for the gearbox. Syncro Gearboxes do not do a support for the TD5 but have put me to MW as they are planning to do such (they are the ones in the TD5 video by the way).

Have already reached out to them regarding the install in the D2.

Have not heard back from HTG and I notice they have put up on the website that the page will being updated - IO CAN gateway – HTG tuning

well, this wasn't expected, broke my left shoulder today after a fall and they are telling me I am 12 weeks aways from even driving...

Still nothing up on the IO CAN gateway site as to the "cool stuff". No more info on dates for completion of adaptors etc. but that rather moot right now!

Far out.. That's no good, that'll slow down proceedings on all fronts.

Hopefully not too bad for you.

Thanks Shack, slow, more like stop!

That said, it is now 12.50 and since before 8 this morning I have been trying to find the dimensions of the 8HP and trying to work how much of a shortening of the rear driveshaft and correspondingly lengthening of the front. Finally found a guide or at least an approximation.

    HP22 E
    This from classic rover forum

"The ZF is 705 mm long, from bell house face to output flange face.

    Width wise 275mm ( ish )

Height wise 305mm ( ish ) at the box case widest point, the bell house is higher..."

So the way I read this, its looks like it doesn't take into account the TD5 Bellhousing length which it indicates for a Rover V8 at 200mm

So ZF4HP with the Bellhousing is 705+200 =905mm

    NEW INSTALL
Based on this information from Chrysler as to their ZF8HP which was the first time I had seen a dimension (the actual pdf file I then found)

    pdfcoffee.com_mmm-zf-8hp-tranny-2-pdf-free.pdf

    8HP Diesel length = 682mm

    ADAPTORS
    8HP to engine length = 78mm
    8HO to LT320 = 110mm
    Total = 188mm

    8HP Gear Box + Adaptors = 870mm

    Difference (905- 870) = 35mm shorter

However there nay be a difference in BMW version length when you view the tails of the 4wd and 2wd versions

Will the engine sit too far forward if you leave the TC where it is and then no shaft changes required ?

Now seeing the approximate 'issue', am waiting even more anxiously for a reply from the MW peoples who have the TD5 D2 in the IO CAN gateway vid and I know are doing a non weld gearbox mount for this changeover, as to what other issues may prevail.

Well the IO CAN gateway webpage is now up, as to the COOL STUFF, well not quite, well not at all actually. Just gives the same overview already seen as to connecting to the CAN and ECU using the OEM programming which in this case is BMW.
