To convert this is as simple as vinyl protector film

The other option is just to use the current gearbox crossmember and a metal tray which are $900+

This of course means that subsequent filter changes are going to incur the $200+ sump cost but as these are going to be 60,000 k's per change, that cost can be amortized across 5 years or more and at the k's I use the D2 per year as not a daily driver, with the stability of the oil, could probably just change the fluid!
Subsequent taker up's of the 8HP will though have a significantly easier and even 'quick' c/o once this is on the market and the thought that the c/o could be done in a weekend with all parts prepared before hand such as the plates, supports, hoses for the cooler, length of driveshafts, console and knowledge of the wiring connections - done at home without a hoist - will make it worthwhile. More so, if looking to do this and taking your time with exchange rates (which are not advantageous at the moment) and bargains as they crop up, pretty good savings could be made against my cost.
The D2 has it foibles no doubt, but, most of these are pretty minor in the TD5 and with the resource of Aulro and other D2 sites there is not much that cannot be fixed pretty simply. The joy out there on the tracks with the ride/comfort and lines of site etc. with pretty dependable mechanicals which a 8HP will remove the major one of concern, well to me is worth it. This cost will take me into the realm of 80 series for investment and much much less than a 79, think I would still go the D2 route!!!

This is an awesome project. Loving it.
Right now I can only dream, but I think I'll pinch the console cutout idea, that's great.

Well the D2 switch pack was a great idea but has to be modified...
The D2 switch pack is too compromised due to the depth to be used, so had to find another solution and in this instance is Carling Switches.
Now looking to have two switches down the R) side of the shifter for the winch and three blank Carling plates for the EBC at the base. The blanks ( Rocker Switch Hole Plug | Rocker Switch Pros )with the LED and rotary switches installed on them should not foul the undertray - see from the 9 minute mark on this as to the compromised area - CREATING THE FIRST EVER 8 SPEED DISCOVERY 2 - YouTube
That said a two way momentary Carling switch will work well for the winch forward and back Carling MOMENTARY Rocker Switch DPDT, 20A 12VDC, (ON) OFF (on) | eBay so one switch on/off, one for the forward/back

PWR Gear Display indicator has arrived, had to go Red as they are the only ones available in Australia for a saving of $120+ over the US ones which are asking for a $99US postage, save me!

This one has a GM adaptor but this is simply taking that off and plugging in wires with a 120ohm resistor to the CAN IO adaptor.
Will be mounted in a a two inch gauge to hide the wire which I hate seeing in dash mountings, or the other option is where the Transfer Box sticker currently is. Will be pretty simple to cut this into a flat and maybe trim the outer console to fit the corners.

Turns out the D2 switch gear would actually fit, got the MUD winch switches and blanks delivered which are smaller than the LR standard ones. Understand if he does not want to modify it again!!!

Basically this would potentially work on any D2 if you wanted extra switches hmmm
Should have a further update on the mounting plates later this week, thinking that at least 5 attachment points per side should suffice on the plates.

Working drawings of the support plates - Do these measurements seem right, 630mm width and chassis height 120mm? Wish I could get down under the D2 and measure these.

Am going to be asking some chassis manufacturers for a dimensional / location holes chart of the gearbox area, slim chance but worth it.

SubscriberThe distance between the chassis rails is near enough to 636mm,.
The rails measure 145mm bottom to top.
I see on your drawings that the horizontal holes are slotted so that could take up the difference and the 120mm height would be ok.
the only other things to consider, regarding the cradle will be the cutting off of the existing cross member mounts, gearbox / transfer case mounts and an exhaust mount as they all impinge on the distance between the rails.
As they would need to be removed anyway, would it ( and this is just a suggestion ) be better to forget the cradle and just reweld the custom transmission mount etc when all the other hardware was in situ?
The Defender plates have cutouts for the existing hardware on the chassis rails
zf mount.jpg
So ideally the simplicity of this is once the gearbox is sited and levelled, the plates can be removed and welded correctly. For future uptake the ability to simply bolt the plates on and have the gearbox and TC sited without the need to take off, weld and replace or modify is important.
Thinking will be asking wreckers if they have a bare chassis Monday, go out and photo, measure and locate any holes / brackets will be my priority. Or if someone in the Melb area has one PM me...
