    Replacing radiator to expansion tank bleed hose TD5

    Hey guys,

    looking to replace the factory plastic bleed hose (PCH116380) that runs from radiator to expansion tank on my d2a td5 with some 8mm coolant hose. Have read some stories of breaking off the plastic spigot from the radiator and would naturally like to avoid this if at all poss!! dont suppose anyone has any tips or tricks they would mind sharing when i attempt this? will be going slow and attempting the opposite of heavy handed

    Figure using the Mrs hair dryer could maybe help prevent anything breaking , maybe some wd40 or similar to help hose slip off ? And not overtighten the hose clamp I put on with new hose.. been trying to have a look thru various forums but yeah only finding stories of it snapping and nothing about how to not snap it! Appreciate any advice fellers

    IIRC, removing old hose and fitting a new length of coolant hose wasn't difficult.
    But I did break the old rad's barb later while doing work, and I reckon because of the added pressure of just looping the non formed hose to the barb.
    The added lateral force on the barb probably added to the ease of snapping it.

    I reckon adding some 90° brass elbows to form the hose into a more natural fitting direction would eliminate the issue, and take the strain off the barb.

    Can't remember why or how I broke the barb, but it had nothing to do with coolant related stuff, and I'm thinking possibly had to do with removing air filter top, or something like that, and accidentally leaned on the loop of hose, or something minimal like that. It was so trivial, and annoying ... but in the end a bit of a godsend at the time.
    I chased up rads, found they were cheap on ebay, and instead of JB weld, maybe just better to replace the rad.

    After pulling old rad, 'twas lucky I did! Inspecting inside it was totally clogged with some goop. I doubt rad was actually doing anything.

    Dont look at it.

    Imo - test it, if it breaks - it was stuffed. Better to find out now in the shed rather than in the bush.

    I feel like replacing with original part runs same risk of breaking the spigot ? Do prefer the idea of rubber over plastic tho

    If this breaks, you can replace it with a copper or brass tube, screwed in and held in with epoxy.

    When I looked at it, I remember near on $100. But now a quick search shows 30-40, but for 'aftermarket' part.

    At that price, makes more sense to go with the formed hose then.
    Originals last years, so being plastic isn't a big deal, and it's easy to get too and keep an eye on too.

    Pretty much what I did, after the head replacement and all the work done on the D2, putting on the surround and snap, so rather than wait even longer, a little tube poked in and epoxy, pipe 101 complete, still the same today with no problem.

    legend thanks boys, have seen these as fixes but good to know they hold up!

    let you know how i get on. dont imagine i'd need to bleed the system when its just replacing this hose?
