Why is it that the green Discos (mine too) have such crap paint jobs on the roof ?

No one polishes them, my Epsom green 98 D1 had perfect paint because it always got polished, sat in Wagga sun it's whole life too.

I disagree. I always washed & looked after mine but like so many others, inc. S1 Discos, it always starts as 2 "fade"marks on the roof & spreads. Rest of the cars paint job holds up well. Interested to hear any other opinions though...

In my family (ex LR dealers) we have kept 4 Discoveries, 2 we still have, 2 went about 18 months ago.

3 have perfect paint, 1 chawton white 00 D2, 1 alveston red 01 D2, 1 epsom green 98 D1. The one that has faded paint and peeling clear coat is Blenheim silver, the 3 with good paint were constantly kept up to with autoglym wax, as was used at the dealership and have been buffed bi-annually since new, the one with peeling paint hasn't been polished/waxed in who knows how long and has rarely, if ever been buffed. A lot of family friends also had/have Discoverys and the ones that have been polished/waxed have perfect paint, 1 epsom green D2 has a faded/peeling roof, again it doesn't get polished/waxed, but is always kept clean.

I think that evidence, along with what I've seen at the LR workshops I frequent has a lot to say for paint maintenance.

Washing won't protect the paint, wax does, washing just slows the inevitable by removing oxidising agents.

Silver car has the obligatory 2 fade marks, so does the green one of our friends.

Slight correction needed... Polishing produces or enhances the shine.... but does little if anything to protect the paint surface...
Wax protects the paint but doesnt last long depending on the wax and how it was applied....even better than wax are the newer Paint Sealants that are on the market... mostly from specialist suppliers.
Some examples of Paint Sealants are Opticoat 2, Nanolex and 22PLE VX1 Glass.
