Nah not my fathers car but the setup was to my the same as fathers, the ones pictured are homemade jobbies I saw and took a pic of.
I saw a company that made them at the Caravan and Camping show a few weeks ago and the setup was similar but I cant remember the company that made them, they wanted like $200 for them.
Its basically a square tube is welded to your towbar tongue and then a small square tube sits inside (2 piece) with 2 pins either side to lock them in with the rubber on either side.
I like the idea of 2 piece so that when you get where your going they are easy stowage.

Okay, that is different to the ones that I seen. The ones I seen are called rock tamers but they are relatively expensive.

I am also in Newcastle if you work out how to do them I would be interested.

OK, can already report that 3mm rubber is too light. It's already started shredding.

Just completed 2500 km with camper van in tow and built similar.
Mine is around 75mm off the ground when not hitched to van as the rubber dragging will flip stones up.
Also on most dirt roads you will be driving in wheel ruts so between the wheel ruts will be higher so I left a gap there also.
At the end of each day had a some small stones on the rear step, no paint chips no broken windows.
    Will post picture soon.
