    Mono stone guard

    Hey all,
Anyone had any experiences with hanging a mono stone guard across the back of their Disco? I've just made one up from 3mm rubber and have hung it from the rear tie-down loops about 70cm behind the rear wheels, running the full width across. Heading inland for an extended trip, and heard of horror stories of people needing to get rear doors resprayed/getting rear windows shattered as stones bounce forward off a trailer.
It doesn't extend to the top of the floorpan, but is this enough to keep most/all stones from bouncing off the camper trailer?
OK, added a pic of it. Cost about $40 all up, as rubber is pretty exxy. Only other mod I need to make is to join the split [it's made from a 1x1.1m square] and wire the chains onto the tie-downs to stop the flap sliding along the chain around corners. May also need to add a bit of weight to the bottom of the flap to help it sit a bit lower, as it sits about two inches off the ground at 60km/h.

Saw something similar at our local Camping and Caravan show a couple of weeks ago, I like the idea of them after seeing the back of my fathers 4wd going to the Cape and back towing their camper trailer.
I think they would be easy to make, I am definitely going to have a go at it at least.
After seeing your pic it is similar to the one Im going to make except it will be attached to the draw bar by 2 tubes and pins for easy release and I wont reverse over them. As for weighing them down I wouldnt bother because when a stone hits it it will deflect back to the ground/road anyways, if a stone goes under it it will be low enough to hit the bottom of the trailer and go under it not the front which is how it will then hit the car.

I may be wrong here but I think there may be some roadworthy issues with mud flaps dragging on the ground, at least here in Vic. Apparently they can actually CAUSE stones to be flicked upwards and thus, cause the damage mentioned.
If you are towing a camper, why wouldn't you have an angled stone guard on it to deflect any nasties?

dunno if its true, but ive heard full width flaps stop the cooling effect on the rear diff, cos the air gets caught up instead of flowing through., dunno if thats just one of those furfies you hear from time to time.

Not really an option thanks to our bodgy set-up. We have a tapered box that runs down the extended A-bar. Its design limits what we can do in terms of fitting a frame to take a stone guard. And besides, we were warned that unless it was well made (read spend $$$ on it), the corrugations would shake it apart.

Wardy, those stone guards on the front of campers are great.... until a stone hits the tube frame of them . They are usually angled down - so most stones bounce down - but if a stone its the frame of the deflector - often they are round tube - so the bounce can go anywhere.

I found in previous trips the most effective system was a combination of the trailer guard.. and driving slower on stony roads. As soon as I went over 80 the back door got peppered regularly.

For my trip this September I'm currently working on something similar to sanbar's solution..... but not dragging on the ground (And probably mounted a bit further back. Plus a perspex protector for the window.

The other cheap answer is corflute and gaffa tape... looks crap but works to protect the door.

    Cheers, Mark

Mounting it further back is probably not as effective because you have to work around the towbar and exhaust, which sits a fair bit lower than the tie-down points.
Watch the gaffa tape, because the longer you leave it the better a hold it gets on the paint. Mongrel stuff.

    Planning | Red Dust Adventures

From Melbourne to Alice it's just my 12yo son and I, we meet the girls in Alice. I can't wait to get out there. I'll do a full trip report when we get back.

I'm pulling him out of school a couple of weeks before the school holidays. His teacher asked if he couple possibly send a couple of pics and emails back to the class... so we figured why not a blog I know internet access will be patchy .. but I'm set up pretty well and we should be able to update it at least every few days.

It's still a work in progress, but starting to come together.

Dazza, is that picture of your dads car? I have been looking at them for my Disco. How do you think they would fit?
