My 2000 TD5 is chipped, larger intercooler (both TRS), on LPG, ERG Blanking, K&N, Baffel removed from exhaust and turbo boost turned up. I have a slide on camper boat on roof etc: (it weights 3.8t - 4.0t). The car goes like a rocket. From my experience I would do things in stages so you can feel the results, start with exhaust and K&N that will cost you around $250, then get rid of the EGR after that do the Chip and the Intercooler (both at the same time, it's meant to reduce the EGT's). If you still want more power do the LPG and or turbo boost, with LPG I have found economy to be about the same, but more power. My Defender 130 with slide on and boat etc: gets about 23L/100 if you have a head wind and keep the power on, if you take it easy and do 90-100km's I get 10L/100 plus LPG. The drive train seems to be hanging in there (they seem to manage to do rock crawling in Defender with standard running gear etc: and they can hold 1.5t and tow 3.5t) I do have maxi-drives all around though
Dont put a K&N in.
its been argued to death, if you want a conclusive argument go look through one at the sun do that with an OEM air filter.

What do you recommend doing to the exhaust for a TD5 to improve performance?
depending on your budget.
initially drop the mufflers for better units and get rid of the last faffy bend that points the exhaust out the back.
after that its a 3 inch stock bend exhaust
then a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust
then 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust
