This issue with DHL is discussed both here and on whirlpool forums, where it seems to be a consensus that its a profit scam by DHL.

How many people have received similar invoices for courier type items from TNT, UPS etc, non that I can recall - just from DHL.

I now tell my suppliers not to use DHL if possible but then I have not actually had an issue with them.

    DHL are Scammers.

    Mine was sent EMS.

DHL are the only company I have had trouble with and I some times go out of my way to check who my freight will be sent with and request other than DHL.

Thanks for all the input on this.

It is certainly very interesting reading.

I am in no way defending DHL on this, and it does seem that it is a DHL only situation, but i would like to point out that this is not the case of DHL as a company in general but seems localised to Austrailia.

Here in Cyprus DHL is by a long way the largest courior and always gets deliveries from the aeroplane to our doorstep in a super fast, efficient, no additional cost and trouble free way, where every other service is a slow and problematic nightmare.

We also use DHL to send quite vast numbers of shipments all over the world and as such are one of their biggest customers here.

Other than this problem occurring in Australia, which does seem to be only on some shipments picked at Random, the service we get from them is most comendable.

Having seen this DHL AU problem before we do now try to assist by also attaching an additional and highly visible declaration on shipments we send to Australia that absolutely states what is required to avoid this.

I am however now going to impliment something above and beyond this in sending any AU recipient using DHL, by E-Mail, a copy of the declarations and notification of the existance of this apparent scam so they will not only be aware of this, but also be aware of how to handle it, while also inform us of the attempt such that we can collect sufficient evidence to make an official complaint to DHL.

Colin - and of course such charges by DHL should be included in the quote that you get from DHL to send the item in the first place so when taken into account they may not be so competitive.

    Garry beat me to it.
I had the same problem with Paddock last year, and I sent them an email advising them what DHL were doing and recommending that they use someone else. No reply. No care.
It's only when we the customers start to hassle the vendors to use someone else that something will be done.
I know as working for an importer and web sales company that it is a hell of a lot easier to do all the documents on line and arrange a pick up when you have an account and of course the seller has up to 90 days to pay. It costs more and is more hassle to use Royal mail or whatever if you have to pay up front and maybe go to the Post Office.
My thought is that DHL have a contract with the seller and the seller has paid and we should all tell them to get the extra money from the seller, who could then try and recover from the customer. That would gain the seller's attention! Or maybe send the invoice from DHL to the seller as it is they who have a contract with DHL.

This is different to customs duties and clearance charges which are known and documented and can be quoted. This is a sneaky out of the blue charge that is sometimes more than the cost of the goods.
BTW , my understanding is that DHL do NOT do the inspection. An AQIS officer comes to DHL premisis and randomly inspects 10% of the shipments. All others such as TNT appear to average this fee which is for AQIS time( user pays) over all shipments while DHL to keep their quoted charges lower charge it directly to the customer.

I gather that a DHL employee has to be there to open and close the consignments and add the "OPENED BY QUARANTINE" tape, and that is what DHL charge about $30 service fee for , in addition to the average AQIS charge of $18..

So come on vendors and let us use TNT or whatever as you will lose business by insisting on DHL.

Royal Mail doesn't always cost more. You choose the maximum size and then choose weight. I had a whole towbar shipped for about $120, air frieght and it arrived in 5 days. It's especially handy for heavy goods.

I know when my inlaws send things to my family from Japan, some things get opened and somethings dont. They ususally have some kind of food in the parcel and also declare it. I guess that makes it more likely to be inspected. We have even had sealed packets cut open with a knife and then taped back up with customs tape. I guess, checked for drugs or whatever. We have never been charged for any of these inpections.

    Hi,
I just received my Nanocom today, but found that a lot of time was lost at different points in transit, Monday here was a public holiday, the device arrived in Melbourne on Sunday and was cleared and sent for delivery that day.

I called DHL Tuesday afternoon only to be told it wouldn't be delivered until today by Australia Post.

I haven't a problem with BBS, they were great, it's just that DHL suck big time and appear to waste too much time, total loss of Tuesday is a good example of this.

Also I am only 45Km from the Melbourne CBD down the Monash freeway, definitely not "VICTORIA STATE OUTLYING AREAS - AUSTRALIA", so go figure.

    Regards,

    Ray

5-6 days delivery is not too bad. I have had quicker and others slower.

Got my Nanocom today, first DHL delivery attempt was Tuesday, I think I paid for it the previous Monday so allowing for the public holiday that's 7 days to Brisbane, not bad.

The package had been opened and had the yellow tape to say it had been inspected, no additional charges from DHL so far but I'll be looking out for any letters demanding payment in the next few weeks which will obviously be ignored.

It's a pity my P38 is at the fabricator's for the next couple of weeks as it has some fault codes that I need to read and reset.

Last April I returned my Nanocom together with one from another AULRO member for repairs. They were sent together as the DHL quote was the same for two as it was for one and we were therefore able to share the shipping costs.
The two units were repaired by BBS and returned by DHL in 14 days which was considered excellent service - thanks to BBS.

However, six weeks after having them returned I receive a phone call and email from DHL requesting a further payment of $94.35 for "duty and taxes".

Naturally I objected and the matter is now being investigated.
Following is the saga of DHL demands and my response.

Somewhat different to the quarantine inspections posted so far but what appears to be another attempted scam by DHL - I await the outcome.

    -----------------------------------------------
    Dear May,

As advised by phone on 4th June 2013 and as indicated by the ticked box on the DHL Shipment Waybill, the item shipped was being returned to the manufacturer for repair.
I paid the agreed cost of $89.99 AUD on 4th April 2013 and also paid for return shipment (also by DHL) of $69.68 AUD.

As I understand it, you (DHL) are now requesting that I pay a further $94.35 AUD for “IMPORT/EXPORT DUTY” for which, despite numerous requests, I have not yet seen the original invoice.
It is obvious that as no import/export duty was payable on the return shipment and as the goods were returned for repair, there is NO import/export duty payable on the outgoing shipment.

I used DHL as it was the carrier recommended by the repairer and I was happy with the service.
However to be requested to pay this unsubstantiated extra charge more than six weeks after the shipment is totally unacceptable.

    Yours faithfully,
    Roger Riley
    -----------------------------------------
    Thanks Roger for your reply.

I will forward your reply to our custom department and investigate. As I am not a custom broker and do not know why your shipment incurred duties.
I think as per your commercial invoice as per screen below you have not marked reason for export as Repair and return This maybe the reason why.
