There was a period of time when Mercedes went all green. They installed wiring looms that were biodegradable. The insulation on these looms have now rotted and the cars are catching fire. I know this because a mates Merc caught fire. He now has a non-biodegradable loom.
My pick of the Mercs for a daily drive would be a W126.
Whatever you do, get a good one. Mine are proving to be quite costly. They can make any Landrover look cheap and reliable.
Oh, I should add, I have people drive round to my place in various Mercedes models usually around twenty years old.
"You collect Mercedes?" they ask.
"I have two." I reply.
"Do you want to buy mine?" they hopefully enquire.
"No." keeping it short so as not to offend.
"How much would it be worth?" eagerly grasping at straws.
"Not much."

The front of that is UGLY in a way only the French can achieve.
I too will be looking for a car to replace Christine's Jackaroo (getting to the age it apparently starts falling to bits and costing $, and uses a fair whack of fuel)
Ideally want a medium size wagon or hatch, good on fuel, a bit more refined than a Falcommodore, a bit more 'fun' than a Toyobishi. And for the $ a mid 90's Jackaroo base model might fetch....
probably too much to hope for....
Interestingly Christine has commented how heavy the steering on the Disco is, compared with the Jackaroo, so I suppose "lighter" power steering should be on the list there somewhere ?

X2 on the Subaru, If I had to retire the disco and get a normal car they'd be my first port of call.
We've had 3 so far, and all have been a real pleasure to drive.
Comfortable, lots of options, we've found ours to be very reliable and they go fast
Only issue is mum seems to go through tyres like they grow on trees, add to that she cracked 2 rims in one go.....
