It's called basic Keynesian economic theory mate, you have to spend your way out of a recession
It's what any responsible Government should do in that sort of huge crisis and was given the thumbs up by most economists around the world, including the IMF and OECD.
We are still in the best position economically of any developed economy. Surpluses and Deficits are normal tools used for fiscal policy control.

It can and has been argued that Messrs Howard and Costello squandered a massive opportunity over several years by not banking much, much larger amounts of money while the going was good, instead they bought elections by splashing out money to buy votes.

Now that manner in which the stimulus was done and administered could have been a handled a hell of a lot better.....

and before anyone accuses me of being a Labor apologist or 'muppet' (eh Stevo ) I'm not a one eyed supporter of any political persuasion, and yet funnily enough I've never voted Labor in my life either, but I sure as hell wouldn't vote for a party led by the Mad Monk

OECD calls for tighter monetary and fiscal policy

THE Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says Australia's quick policy response to the global financial crisis helped the economy to weather the storm. Now it says both budget and interest rate policy need to be tightened further to manage the economy's recovery.

Yep and we will just get another liar.
Gillard better I think not, just a popularity ploy to get the female vote.
What happens when we get tired of her, Swan, now theres a sleaze.
Kick them out at next election and get that clown Abbott. Well he may as well bring back Costello so at least they would have some basis to conduct their routine.
I think if K Rudd at least had the guts to come out and back track a bit and admit he stuffed up on the mining tax and it needed to be reviewed he would have had some dignity and may have retained his position.
What annoys me is yes we elected labour, but mores so that also reflected the choice for PM. The party should not be able to change that without going to an election.

    Diana,
Come on, it is irrelevant who is the PM. They certainly do not have the mandate or authority to make decisions on their own. It is the party as a whole that makes the decision. Not at all disagreeing Thatcher was a strong leader, but that is more about charisma and personality, hence why these people are chosen by there party. Most often the policy makers are the people that sit at the back and are genius, but have no personality or charisma.

Not necessarily disagreeing with you about the Parliamentary System, however it is the Prime Minister who gets to select those who will fulfill ministerial positions and it is he (sic) who will select people into the front bench who are most likely to agree with the PM's policy directions. And as we know the party system is very coercive about toeing the party line. Step out of it and expect to spend a lot of time sitting in the back benches.

Mandate after all is merely political rhetoric, thrown about or disregarded as a Government chooses.

We only have to look at the conflicting mandates between the Government and the Aust. Democrats over the GST and when Democrat Meg Lees crossed the party line (mandate to keep them honest and no GST) it spelt the end of the Aus. Dems. as a political party.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Gee it's good to see polly bashing is alive, what ever your persuasion.
It's ford versus holden, collingwood vs carlton.

Every one having a field day shooting off their mouths, but no one is game to get up an run for PM themselves, seems every one can do a better job driving from the back seat.
It's such an easy job that's why everyone wants to take it on??????
