from memory tyres in Aus need to be DOT approved. not sure if that is an Aus thing or worldwide thing. will look it up
i know second hand jap tyres aren't DOT and there is some discussion if they are legal to use or not
Got a reply saying shipping costs for 4 x 215/75R15 BFG AT tires is $315.05 for 3-5 day shipping and $451.92 for 1-3 day shipping.
That would have 4 BFG ATs landed here for ~$800. Hence, not super cheap, but cheaper than buying them here (if you can source them).
found this on autospeed
"There's a simple way of identifying whether or not a tyre is legal for road use. If it has "DOT" or "E" written on the sidewall, it's passable - no probs. DOT is the US abbreviation for the Department of Transport, while "E" is the recognised European compliance symbol."
my guess coming from USA they "should" be DOT approved, maybe just make sure. cos insurance and your friendly transport inspectors will certainly let you know, after its too late.
So, just finalised pricing on 5 x BFG AT 215/75R15 from tirerack.com.
Total price, including shipping is US$811, which works out to be ~$AUS830. This equates to ~AUS$166 per tyre at my door.
Unfortunately, local suppliers can't get close to that, nor can they get their hands on them.
The only thing left to work out is will they be compliant in Australia - any ideas?
I would suspect the BFG's from the states will be exactly the same as the ones sold over here, so will be compliant. I can't imagine BFG having to make a different tyre for each country.
That is a very good price, I paid $330 fitted and balanced for BFG AT's ($1420 for all four) last year.
and get some bling fron instanbul while you are at it!
