Might be worth a new effort with changes that came into effect recently - and note that the responsibility for fixing problems lies with the retailer in the first instance, not the manufacturer, and the new rules apparently make this clearer. I think there was a thread here a while back pointing out the problems this creates for the retailer, but the view from the consumer's point of view is a bit different. Presumably the dealer has more influence with the manufacturer than does a single individual.

Now thats a thought... when a retailer - in this case an established dealer - tells LR that selling its {rubbishy} product is all too hard and that Chinese 4WD's are looking more profitable... there's a faint possibility that they *might* listen...

Especially if said dealer has or can show that they are able to sell another product...

No shop-front = no sale for manufacturers.

Setting up from scratch would not be cheap, and then THEY'LL cop the flak from irate customers! Poetic justice.

Yep, it’s been removed, rebuilt and returned, for a much lower cost than expected, $380.

This will now be the cheapest portion of the total costs.

They had to dismantle the front end to get at the alternator.

My mechanic was not sure this was how it should have been done so the rang one of the LR service centres to get an idea of the normal hours charged for the job.

They nearly fell off their chair when the service manager told them it was a two hour job.

He told them the Supercharge V8 was listed as a two hour job in the LR service charges.

My mechanic told the service manager it was a TDV8 and the service manager replied, they take so long to do that there is no work scheduled time listed for the job.

So, so far so good, but I’m still planning on selling a kidney on Ebay to pay for the repairs.

... So it was the alternator THE fault?, - shorting out ?

Did anyone take any pics of the 'excavation' to reach said alternator ?

Got to admit, my '89 Pajero also has the alternator mounted right at the bottom... under the high-tide level...

But I've removed/replaced it from the top by leaning over and down, despite my 115+ kg !

The price is very good though...

So the alternator drained the battery and the vehicle shut down? Doesn't sound like the most dangerous 4 x 4 ever made to me. Could happen to any vehicle, really.

It’s not that the alternator failed in itself, it’s that when the alternator failed, and this caused a total power and motor shutdown and some how caused the steering lock to apply while the RR was on the move.

The steering is not supposed to lock until the ignition key is turned to the OFF position and then remove.

To get the key into the OFF position, the transmission must be in the PARK position.

The key was in the ON position and the transmission was in DRIVE.

That situation makes the RR one deadly vehicle.
