I have searched the net and all I can some up with is no jobs available.

When I say I am unskilled I am a Motor mechanic but got out of it 11 years ago, and I reckon the technology has now surpassed me. Also mines would want Diesel/truck mechanics not car ones. I also have experience driving semi's interstate. There is not a lot I can't do, just don't have the necessary tickets.

Dave, a lot of the "diesel fitters" or heavy duty mechanics on minesites are actually motor mechanics. There is a shortage of qualified diesel fitters out there, and many companies take on motor mechanics and provide training in heavy equipment maintenance. Also, most minesites have pretty substantial fleets of light vehicles (mostly Toymotas) and do their own maintenance on site, so there is work for motor mechanics there as well. I know that our workshop on site looks after all of our own vehicles, plus those of our client and another two contractors on site as well - we have set up a dedicated light vehicle workshop behind the main workshop for this purpose.

Possibly one way to get a foot in the door is to approach some of the contract service providers who supply fitters / mechanice to the mines and see if you can get a start with them. Around Kalgoorlie, there are dozens of these, like Haynes Mechanical, ATS, MMS (Minesite Mechanical Services) and many others. No doubt there are similar numbers in most mining regions.

My son is a diesel fitter - did his apprenticeship with one of these service companies and worked for a while in their "field service" division - and is now in a full time position with one of the mining companies (was previously his client) at an underground operation in Coolgardie. He works 7 on : 7 off, home every day, and is on better than $50 per hour - not too bad for a 25 year old.
    Cheers .........

I've been working as a subby paid by the job - had a ripper last month 4 hrs travel not paid for and then 10.5hrs work all for the princely sum of $170-00

I moved my entire family to QLD as there are so many jobs going here (after 30 years in the topend - to hot and a year in Adelaide - to cold). I am a dual trade Electrician / refrigeration and Air Conditioning mechanic with 30 years of trade, management and training experience. To the seventy zillion jobs i have applied for ' sorry you must have a QLD electrical license' This is wrong as mutual recognition means that any trade from anywhere in Australia must be recognised. when I point this out I get any thing from take it up with the premier to sorry company policy.

I am actively looking for work overseas as I am sick to death of the attitude I am getting from my own countrymen and women when applying for work. The mines are some of the best - you must have 3 years mining experience to be considered - umm how the hell do you get the experience if they will not hirer you without it????????????? even though I have all the skills sets and knowledge they require, which is industrial experience.

So I have applied for my QLD electrical license which will take another month to be processed meanwhile I cant work in my trade as no one will hirer me without it, So now I do anything to keep the money coming in God love Australia

Not just Queensland - probably the same in every state in Australia.

I know that I cannot employ an electrician to work on site over here unless he/she has a WA Electrical Workers licence. It's not company policy, but a regulatory requirement - so you can thank our state governments and the multitude of shiny-arsed bureaucrats who need to dream up this rubbish to justify their own existence for this and similar situations.

I can never hear or read the phrase "Diesel Fitter" without being reminded of this joke:

Paddy and Mick were both laid off, so they went to the unemployment office. When asked his occupation, Paddy answered, "Knicker Stitcher. I sew da elastic onto ladies' knickers and thongs."

The clerk looked up Knicker Stitcher on his computer and, finding it classified as unskilled labour, he gave him £80 a week unemployment pay.

Mick was next in and when asked his occupation replied, "Diesel Fitter."
Since a diesel fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick £160 a week.

When Paddy found out he was furious. He stormed back into the office to find out why his friend and co-worker was collecting double his pay.

The clerk explained, "Knicker Stitchers are unskilled labour and Diesel Fitters are skilled labour."

"What skill?" yelled Paddy. "I sew da elastic on da knickers and thongs, Then Mick puts 'em over his head and says: "Yep, diesel fitter.""

This is the trouble I have looked up the legislation and that is not correct, each state has mutual recognition written into it's electrical legislation, someone is trying to pull the wool over our eyes, and when I politely explain that they cant do that the fall back is company policy which in fact is discrimination, I am so bloody frustrated over all of this, i could scream - but I agree totally with the bureacratic comment.

All of this has come about since the COAG (Committee of Australian Governments) to bring in national licenses and do away with state ones, all states agree it should be done but each states wants it to be done their way and will not bend, negociate or compromise on the issue; since this each state is now trying to (illegally) enforce only their state license is recognisedin each state.

I've got a mate in Melbourne who's a gynaecologist. Ask him what he does for a living and he'll tell you he's a "crack mechanic".

    - Hours worked

South Oz miners dont pull much more than $90k unless they pull a lot of O/T.

Conversely - Pilbara miners for instance, get high incomes, but ever looked at the price of rental in the area? Cost of food, fuel etc? It tends to balance out.

Me, I dont "mine" but do work at one, as one of the Grade controllers AND the snake handler

The stresses of my job are decisions worth millions every day - not a few million, LOTS of millions - we're talking company killing decisions...

Then there are venomous reptiles - how much would YOU like to be paid to go grab 6 foot of angry, pee-ed off snake? I just went and removed 2 today that were upsetting the work crew nearby.

I packed up my family and moved 6 years ago to a better lifestyle and actually less pay (when I first moved here) and was happy..

Now both myself and my lovely wife work in MX (Mines and Export) and make a great living... Our 17 yr old son is happy, has a better, balanced life here and we all enjoy the fruits of our labours...

Would I go on call? Well I am, constantly, and paid a retaining rate to be as such... And when called, my rate increases accordingly... And so it should - My private time is more valuable to me than my pay rate.

You want people, you pay... Simple....

People want more money.. Heres a few ways how..
    - Work more hours
    - Work for better employer
    - Change jobs / job field
    - Move
    - Study more - Get educated in a field that pays more

But on the original topic - maybe the stars and moon aligned and all those people where actually busy/ on the loo/ outside, etc when you rang...
    It does happen...
