    hi bob,

I dont think the action was Adelaide, I thought it was Sydney??

That strike action is always Government School employees & union action in the most part. To some extent executive staff are paid more to clean up the s____ after it hits the fan or hopefully before it hits, and doing relief lessons is one of those delightful aspects so yeah its negotiated, well kind of. Yes we should offer O/T to teachers but the age - old comment would come from many arena "but i thought you did the job for the love of teaching or students etc etc" which is half true and half crap. I love teaching and do it for that reason. The fact that I get $90k is a great part of that too as far as I am concerned.

    Hi Rosscoe.

I agree with your comments for sure. Unfortunately this is the way society or the government or whoever sees the value of various occupations....Teachers = $75000, mine workers $250000! silly? Some would say no, others would say yes! The profit of big companies governs that aspect. There are other countries in the world that pay their teachers HEAPS more and get great levels of achievement but then again theres countrys that pay heaps less and still get great results academically...who knows!

I earn $90k but I am not bigotted or anything like that and wish to God that society/government viewed some jobs and more worthy than they do and paid as such.

I would love to pay my staff double but we simply dont have the money to do so. We have got a 5% pay increase each year for the last 3 and I am quite happy with that really.

So begs the question that people constantly bicker over...should exec's of massive companies be earning massive salaries? Like Alan Moss was earning like $20M a year....I think, YES YOU GO GIRL! If he can get the work and earn the $$$$ then all power to him. Would he really have a life? I doubt it. Would he need to or be able to do that job for many years? No I doubt it. Would the pressure be huge? FAR%YEAH! If he stuffed it, would he be offered a contract renewal? I doubt it. Do I want his job...FAR%NO!!!! Should he be "allowed" to earn that kind of coin? FAR$YEAH!

Should the dole pay so much? NO WAY! I used to live in Port Macquarie, and the number of people who moved there to bum on the dole and surf was huge! The centrelink laws were changed specifically to combat this. They ruled that unless you had family in Port, you couldnt get the dole for a period of 6months after you moved there, which in short meant that you couldnt just move to this beautiful town to surf and claim the dole...great law I think.

That comment just sticks in my throat. Come and live in small town rural Victoria or be born and bred there and you'll see that unskilled jobs pay $10 to$20 an hour if you can get a job which are usually scarce and even then frequently only offer part time/casual employment.

Yes. There are dole recipients but through no fault of their own and yes, they deserve the support. I wouldn't like to have to live on that small dole payment given the extremely high rural food prices and the exorbitant price of petrol where petrol price discounting is unknown. And where there is no bulk billing or recognition of a Health Care Card at the local doctor.

Perhaps you might reconsider making such grand standing all encompassing statements.

My apologies for that as I really really didn't mean to imply that thought.

My sentiments were aimed toward those typical dole bludgers who bludge off us and hence the government for whoeasier it's to get the dole rather than bothering to find a job, as that might affect their freedom to catch a surf break coming in next week!

I think maybe the way people qualify for the dole should be revisited to somehow discriminate between legit and non-legit and I suppose that's the gazillion dollar question isn't it.

I understand the legit struggles of small towns and the struggles of many to find work that will keep them alive and wouldn't debate the need for the dole in that sense, at all, not for a moment.

Sorry ........... couldn't disagree more. What you're saying is that if these people choose to continue living where they cannot find employment, then the rest of us are more or less obliged to pay their way. Crap.

Living in a small country town is a bit like running a business - if you can't make a living out of it - get out.

I'm originally from small country towns myself (due to what my father did for a living). I quickly realized that there was no future there for me - so I moved to where the work was available.

So I'm afraid that I don't hold with the view that people should just be allowed to sit where there is no work and expect the workers of this country to carry them - not a lot of difference to the bums in Port MacQuarie if you ask me.

At the same time though, I don't want to generalize. I realize that there are some who for various reasons cannot easily move, and each case should be treated on its merits.
    Cheers .........

Crikey. Toss in free housing and utilities and this would describe nearly every aboriginal community in the country!

I went to re-sit my Emergency Response Training 2 weeks ago.

For 2x 6 hour sessions I walked away with a little under $1800 pre Tax.

As a SA/NT company manager 6 years ago I was topping no more than $65,000 pa

I'd never go back to city life (or work)
