on the basis that i've been told more than a couple of times by management/supervisors that if i want to get a start doing it on mine sites, get an address on the coast..... makes it seem like the mining companies and contractors avoid hiring locals

nope, and from what i've had to do with mining up here as well as talking with drivers, it isnt a problem on mine sites either, especially when you hear them bragging about how easy thier jobs are.....
