Thread: Waeco vs Engel

I recently shouted myself the Waeco CF50DZ for fathers day as BCF had it on special for a fantastic price with the insulated cover thrown in for free.

Engels might have the better reputation for reliability and and being prettier to look at but then its like comparing an overpriced cruiser to a defender.

The dual zone of the Waeco is great. It can be all fridge, half fridge half freeze or all freeze. We went for a long overdue trip down to the beach yesterday and it was great being able to have in the Waeco our cans of coke, some water, sausages for the bbq and some icecream for the kids.

I bought the two zone kit for my Engels in W.A. a couple of years ago but I think the company is no more. Its a shame as they are fantastic. I run one as all freezer and the other as fridge/ freezer. It also adds a good 10 ltrs or so more space.

Many of the previous comments would suggest the Engel is the "Defender" of Fridge/Freezers.

The ARB, like anything else with their badge is military spec. The cheapest thing that meets the minimum requirements supplied by someone that will allow their product to be degraded by having a ARB badge stuck on it.

I have had an 80ltr Waeco since 2004 and hasn't skipped a beat. The only thing I have done is raised the divider between fridge and freezer by 5mm to allow better convection of refrigerated air from the freezer compartment to the fridge compartment. A lot of the time if we are only going away for the weekend (like weekend just gone) I don't put the top half of the divider in and it cools the fridge down a lot quicker. I had to make a slide as one wasn't available at the time. The fridge has been all over NSW, QLD and SA on all sorts of roads and has done some serious 4wd'ing and has worked flawlessly.

Just make sure your wiring is up to scratch - particularly with the Waeco.
The Engel will run (but not efficiently) on poorer wiring but the Waeco wants nice (no loss) cabling

agree, i have the 50ltr dualzone waeco and had some troubles until i upgraded the wiring to the back of the car.

Nar that's a Trailblazer - only one with 50mm insulation - which makes them very large for the volume but nothing comes close for keeping cold.

I have own all of them over the years my current line up is a waeco 80 for the fridge and a trailblazer 50 for the freezer.

dont discount the Evakool they are very good value for money and well made.
