It's simply the way some people justify their opinions, it isn't logical, it's being human. It's the same way people bag anyone who doesn't agree with them on fave football teams, religion, politics, environmentalism, gay rights etc. "I am intelligent therefore my opinion is right and everyone else is STOOPID!!!11!!". I see this in the Soapbox threads every day...

I drive and tour with a multi-marque club up here in the Pilbara and while there is constant banter on the 2-way its all in good spirit.

In the beginning I got a bit of the "hey you left half your car at home..." chirps on the 90, but since then I've towed a Patrol home (busted fan after a water crossing) and I've recovered a 200 Series off the beach the banter has drifted off to a bloke in a new Isuzu ute.

The other day we were gathering at the local road house for a Sunday drive and some random bloke in a 100 Series with NSW plates just stopped, wound down his window and shouted at me that my Defender has no place in Northern Australia! If this didn't startle me enough, the response from the Nissan and Toyota drivers in the club did! Every single one of them jumped to my defence and told this bloke where to go and get off...!

I think it is just that some people like this particular character are born to be idiots and they naturally gravitate towards what the masses will deem as the "popular" or "correct" brand to buy.

To be fair, I did have one bloke who came in and asked about the Defender, and wanted to know "how it went" etc and asked the question why I bought it over other brands. I simply explained to him that when I was shopping around and I had a check list of things that I wanted, and if it ticked all the boxes regardless of brand then it went on the short list and that the short list had only 2 vehicles, Defender and Landcruiser and as I could not see the extra 40,000 odd $ in value and given that I was on a budget and had X to spend, then this was it.
"Oh fair enough" was his reply, "I did the same when I bought my hilux". Nice bloke and we had a good chat.

    i must say though...

i get alot more people commenting on how good my truck looks then people bagging it
I get a lot more people bagging my car than commenting how good it is. Mind you, with a varied collection of eleven vehicles, I think it is more of a reflection of the person commenting than the vehicle.

Some years ago, a young petrol station attendant commented on my Landrover "Nice truck. I have one too. Do you have problems with rust in the panels?"
In retrospect, I wish I had stayed a while and chatted more about his Landcruiser.

IMO it's actually a sign of massive insecurity or feelings of inferiority plus feelings of a lack of control in their personal lives, often coupled with barely contained rage as they don't cope well with feeling these emotions, hence the outbursts and confrontations.

Well, that's the psychological assessment coming from a professional mechanic.
Of course they can just be nutters or borderline psychotic.

Where's Alan, we need a professionals input

I'm looking after my mates dog,his wife is Thai and she named the dog Tom Yum
Bit rough naming your dog "clear spicy soup" . No wonder it is savage.

it's a bit like penis envy only metalic

Actually there are several brands I would be happy to own -
    a jeep rubicon, just awsome
a halflinger - tiny old and awsome
    a Oka big and awsome
a nissan tray back 4.2 tough as nails and reliable
a series 80 tojo wasn't to bad bit underpowered but still good.
I'm not over fussed on the newer landies my dream one would be a 110 with the 3.9 in it.

Truth is after 32 years of driving 4x4s for work and play I'm pretty confident that I can fast gauge the capabilities of the vehicle and drive accordingly; and I might add a good driver in a high clearance 2wd will go damned near as far as a bad driver in a 4wd often further because they know when to stop or go round something.

i can't see what all the fuss is about. Land Rover drivers have nothing to prove. Yet again and again Toyo and patrol riders have an axe to grind or a chip on their shoulders.
Next time you on the road take notice, if a patrol or toyo dirver is behind you, they feel the need to pass you just to be ahead of you. They just think it's uncool to be4 seen behind a land rover. It's the little finger syndrome, mine is bigger than yours attitude.
    Next time your out observe.

I find that driving an old car.
On the way back from Adelaide easter, several drivers pulled out and hurriedly screamed past me pulling in front of me just in time only to be passed by me at the next passing lane.

...or in my turbo isuzu countys' case; the next long hill, and towing my camper trailer it's a favourite trick after being overtaken by a n/a 80 or 100 series diesel cruiser on the flat, only to 'push' them up the next hill.... if i get to overtake them, all the better so they can hear the whistle and see the rijidij turbo intercooled sticker as i cruise on by...
