After reading the full article, at least with this version they are heading in the right direction I believe. The simple fact is if they only sold 18000 units last year and the trend has been like that for years it is doomed and that's all there is to it.

I love the defender and will get one with a 3.9 in it one day but that is a 20 plus year old vehicle not a new one so I'm not helping land rover when I buy it. Everyone acknowledges the ergonomics are umm interesting at best so why not revamp it and build a better one.

What we are losing is the 'look' of the defender and that I find sad

Not only does the article date from early August 2011, the vehicle depicted is just an artist's impression, not a photograph of an actual vehicle. The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show has come and gone and Land Rover showed a Defender 'replacement concept' that did not look anything like the vehicle in the Autocar article (the DC100). The DC100 was also shown at the 2012 New York Motor Show (6-15 April). You can find a heap of photographs (and videos) of the DC100 here: Official Land Rover News & Information | Jaguar Land Rover Media Centre including some from both the New York and Frankfurt motor shows. And remember, this is a concept, not production, vehicle. The DC100 may well go into production but that does not mean that it will do such as a replacement for the Defender. There are certainly murmurings around that other options are being explored.

Well, it would help if they had more dealers, and more stock, and actually advertised the damned things. In other words, if only they put some effort into the Defender then maybe they'd sell some!
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

it will use 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol and diesel engines built at Jaguar Land Rover's forthcoming new engine factory in Wolverhampton. They will have hybrid and plug-in capability too.

The engines will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that has intelligent stop-start.
A hybrid automatic.. that's about as far from a Defender as they could possibly get.. *sigh*
