Blow out the dust, check that no rodents have made a nest or chewed on any wires and give it a go. If it is that old they tend to live forever!

The only way to work out what is going on is to mega the cabinet,to check for any leakage to earth.Defrost heater is often the culprit, but it could be anything causing the issue.
And mega is a technical term for......?

    thanks, DL

    I think he means megger
Old tradies talk for insulation tester
Megger is a brand of insulation tester
It was the brand to have (or the only brand?) back in the day
Outputs 250, 500 or 1000 volts dc, “inject” double the working voltage into whatever you want to test (usually active or neutral to earth) to make sure their isn’t any electrical leakage
Be careful with electronics in all the new appliances, as it has tendency to like to fry them if not tested correctly

The most common in Australia was the Evershed & Vignoles "wee megger". These are only 500 volts.

Why would one wish to Megger one's wee FFS? You certainly wouldn't want to try it prior to having a Wee.
Where would one attach the cables, on the foreskin.? Bloody OUCH!

Anyway, megger. Megger, Mega, Magoo, Meggar? Mottled Brown Bakelite case. Agents. H. Rowe & Co. I knew what he was on about.

Its only because the young apprentice has to put up with older tradespersons calling it a megger. Your lucky hes not a smart arse like some of the apprentices I've had to deal with who will try and correct me whenever I use the old terminology, they soon learn to look out for me holding a bit of twin active hooked up to the insulation tester (megger) ready to strike

I bet he calls connectors blueys as well
