That'll buff out. A quick rewire and she'll be apples.

I bet that stench went blocks.

The best ones we find today are the genuine Kirby metal shelled one's,but ATM they are getting hard to get, particularly the popular sizes.More expensive but well worth the extra coin.

Evaporator coils are the same,30yrs ago we could usually fix the leaks, and maybe replaced a handfull a year.
Today we change more than one a week.
We have actually replaced two cabinet and one cold room evap so far this week, and another approved late this arvo to be done Friday.
Most of them are less than 8 yrs old, many around 5 yrs old.
Just cheap crap paper thin copper.

Speaking of "crap paper thin" have you noticed the toilet paper you get these days? I reckon they cut back during Covid, saw it was a good money spinner & never improved.
    Bottom line sounds familiar.

Metal Shell Kirbys? Still oil filled?

One of my mates used to rent out refrigerated vending machines. He used to buy replacement evaporators by the carton from China. Eventually he found a supplier that would make a better unit that wasn't built to fail, but he replaced a *lot* before he got there.

Nothing is built to last much past the warranty period anymore. Not as bad as the job lot of soft copper tube I imported that creased when bent, and rusted when left on the lawn under the sprinklers. I've never met "magnetic copper" before. An interesting alloy if I've ever met one.

They don't build them like they used to.

Yes one of the first things passed on to me was ALWAYS short out the terminals but when you need a Defibrillator it is a case of needs must.

There are a lot of complaints about pin holes in paired tubing these days, everyone is pointing fingers and blaming someone else. Some of it only months old.

Bottom line, it is just **** copper.

While doing tests, some have found out the current 410/R32 copper is actually quite a bit thinner than the old R22 paired tubing, and below the regulated thickness.

No one is really regulating the industry,so no surprise there.

So Pressure Testing is out then? Another backward step if that is the case.

Google Bundy Tubing. Steel tube with a copper skin over it.

IIRC there was a series of posts a few years ago about how the whole deal was going to be properly regulated.

Was this just a QLD thing or has nothing happened? You're most likely to know all about this Paul.

Yeah, no this was a proper alloy of some kind. There wasn't much steel in it, but enough to make a magnet stick, it showed rust spots and it was as brittle as buggery. Even freshly annealed it split when trying to flare it, let alone trying to get a decent bend.

I used proper bundy tubing when I replaced the transmission cooler pipes on my Volvo. It's easier to work with than this Chinese "copper" and flared nicely.

There's a lot of it about. I have some from a pair of splits I installed at home back in 2010. The insulation has turned acid and started to eat the pipes. I bought the pair coil on E-bay, so I suppose I deserved that. Last time I did an install I paid the extra for Crane copper. Haven't regretted that.
