Also, if you think Digger is wrong, stick some lights on your roof and take a drive to SA - he may just 'shed some light' on it for you (pardon the pun...). Drivesafe said that individual states need to adopt this ADR to make it legal - that may be the stumbling block...

I might steer clear of the Riverland District in the Classic for the time being...

The way I look at it, you're only going to get pinged for it if:
-You're being a dickhead with them and blinding people
-You've done something to annoy whoever pulls you over and they make you pay for it
Bit of respect goes a long way.

It's from 2006 so it's hardly current and is only for QLD, but it states there's no individual height specification, doesn't mention roof vs front of the car.

And as always the interpretation depends wholly upon the man with the infringement notice booklet burning a hole in his pocket and how much he got the night before!
But really as DM says , dont be a fruitloop and all is good. I can remember being asked to remove spoties from the top of the bullbar on the 2A, but drawing his attention to the fact the spare on the bonnet prevented them being in "line of sight" I was allowed to carry on !

Qld. Transport rules clearly say the lights may not be mounted to the top of any bullbar. Line of sight is not a consideration. I suspect the instigation may have been hopefully to minimise pedestrian injuries.

If our guardians of law and order wanted to ping motorists for "line of sight" offences they only have to site themselves at any suburban intersection and pull over the vehicles with GPS navigators and toll transducers in "line of sight".

Brian, yes I know the "not on bullbar" thing but it has always been explained as being above the bonnet and being in "line of sight". I daresay the pedestrian thing is the main though. Hmm Pedestrian safety with a S2? GPS Navs , I know of 2 people so far have been pinged for having them directly in front of them. It appears as long as they are low and not obstructing "line of sight" it seems ok. I think they use the same idea as for windscreen cracks?
Oh, and I didnt escape the attentions on that day easy, the sarge let me go with the lights, but his constable nicked me for dusty n/plate At Musgrave on the 'Cape!! Give a woman a badge.......................

It appears this thread it turning into a legal debate which is not really what I had in mind, some relevent posted info on legalities is fine but all I was really after is how others have done it, there are lots out there, I see then everyday on the roads and I like the look of a lot of them as well as in IMO they would function better up high, so come on guys share your intal tips and thanks to those who have already.
