NSW P plater - Prohibited Vehicles Exemption

    Hi All,

I'm looking into buying an '83 Rangie, 3.5 V8 with standard carbs (whole car is original)... however some dimwit in the RTA law department decided a few years ago that ALL petrols with 8 or more cylinders should be banned for P platers (due to bogans crashing commodores).

There is however the possibility of getting an exemption.

Has anyone got one for a Rover V8? I've been on the phone to the RTA call centre but they are next to useless and I have found the forms. But get this, I have to buy the car before i can see if i can drive it!

I emailed the exemptions department but i got a standard reply about it not being on the list of moderately powered prohibited vehicles (even though the Td5 flogs it!!!).

So I'd like to try and get it added to the list as it is very low powered IMO, if not transfer my licence to the farm and apply as a country driver

If anyone has any experience with this or can offer advice it would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
    Will

I believe there is a course you do at eastern creek an advanced driver style course. Then u take the paper work to the rta, may not be this simple but I see so many green P platers in turbo/supercharged/v8 cars getting around I assume its not difficult, please let us know how u go

Well, my friend got an excemption for his turbo'd saab (hence to be referred to as Turbosaabâ„¢) and it screams along.
Similar to what dan says, I think you can do an advanced driver training course which allows you to drive prohibited vehicles, which should be lots of fun

I would be interested to know the outcome of this also, as I wanted to get an old Range Rover in NSW on my P's but was in the same situation as you are, Will. The RTA P-plate restrictions are a joke, all it's done is stop (young) idiots being idiots in SSs/XR8s/Skylines etc to being idiots in anything else.

RRCs and D1s are prohibited, yet similar sized Japanese 4WDs of similar vintage with similar power levels are still allowed. Even though they are heavier and have less "safety" features, oh well - typical government 'band-aid solution'.

I'd be tempted to just drive it, seeings as it's going to be a 'play thing' anyway.

But if i can do it legally I will.

I think there was a thread on this a while back and if I remember correctly an old RR V8 was problematic exemption wise.

While I agree with the idea of the policy its execution is crap - even my 101 is not eligible and it doesn't go fast at all.

Ive tried, tried 3 times each time the exemption letter would go to a higher person, all 3 got the same response. Even supplied many engine, speed, weight related facts as my xr6 ute has three times the go the rangie does. Sadly nothing worked and they did not want to budge. So i ended up doing a 200tdi conversion. This is vicroads by the way but Im not liking your chances.

Need to get some Tdi stickers

I think the only way I have a chance is to try and get it added to the "list", so I'll see how that goes.

    Cheers
