I think there's a couple of bits of information that you've missed in the original account Craig.

The first is that my wife wasn't in the dogs yard as such, she was in an area that was permanently inaccessible to the dogs, as it was gated and fenced.

The second was that it wasn't the first time or even the tenth time that my wife had performed exactly the same exercise, it was probably on average once a week over a couple of years. The female dog was normally docile and easy to control.
We had both been out helping the owners look for the dogs a number of times when they escaped, and it was my wife who was sitting comforting the female dog in the back of the car on the way to the vet one evening after the dog broke her leg trying to get over the fence (again).

In short, we thought we knew them, and that they knew us. But in that last 6 months when the guy was away constantly doing his TV thing, and they were effectively ignored, something changed. And what was a normal, routine, albeit frustrating and annoying task, turned out anything but. In hindsight it was a mistake, we should have drawn the line much sooner, but as the old theory goes - nothing dulls the feeling of danger like routine.

Dave, not having a shot at your wife at all and sorry if I missed the point about the yard, she is a gem for trying to do the right thing. Certainly hope she makes a speedy recovery as dog attacks can be horrifying and traumatic. The owner is the one at fault here as he has neglected the dogs. All I say to people is be extremely on guard when returning dogs or entering a dogs yards or even front of their property even if you think you know them as it is nature at times to guard their territory and unfortunately that is what may have occurred. I really hope your wife gets better soon and they throw the book at this idiot. We have lived alongside some big and gorgeous dogs that are really friendly when with there owner or on the street, but I would not enter the yard or any fenced off area with these dogs without making sure they knew I was there and were dosile and even a couple I would not enter the yard at all without an owner.
Was not trying to hijack the thread either just annoys me when people start naming breeds but generally can never back it up with fact. Rottweilers generally have a good record with low numbers of attacks as do Staffies, but many dogs are labelled Staffies because they look like a bull terrier, but are usually cross breeds and usually only whatever the person attacked or rushed says the dogs are. Even in comparison true pure bred Pit Bulls and Am Staffs rarely attack, but the issue is when a solid or big dog does it can be quite serious. I have proven rangers wrong on several occasions when they called a dog a Staffy. Having aaid that all dogs can and will attack given the right circumstance. Way too many people that do not look after their animals.
Once again sincerely hope your wife makes a speedy and full recovery.

But he does sometimes like to get out and about...


Oh and the main reason I bought the Disco over a different brand 4x4 was for the 3rd row air conditioning.

What a beautiful looking dog.

It's honestly got me beat how anyone could possibly think of a dog like that as being a "nasty breed".

A while back, I was invited by a member on here to a bar-b-que where I also met his and his partner's two Rotty's. They had kept them locked inside the house earlier in the evening while there were a few small kids around, as the dogs were rather large and could be a bit "boisterous".

After the kids had left, they asked if I minded if they let their dogs out and warned me that they were large, and that the younger one had a habit of jumping up on you. I said "go for it" as I love large dogs. Was the first time that I had seen Rotty's which had not had their tails "docked". They were a beautiful pair of dogs. Yes - the younger one jumped up and knocked me over - more than once - but mainly because I was encouraging it and having a great old time having a tug-of-war (with me losing) and generally having a great time with it.

I was brought up with German Shepherds and have had a couple myself, but unfortunately the current life / work arrangements don't allow me to have a dog any more - I'm away from home too much and it's not fair to my wife and daughter (nor to a dog) to ask them to look after another one when I'm often not around.

Definitely envy people with a dog like yours though rb30gtr.

Haha I love Rotties they are gorgeous! A good friend of mine who lives not far from me is a breeder, they have had some amazing litters.

I must admit Marshall looks a bit depressed to be in the back of the Disco, maybe he really is a Toyota supporter?

Well believe it or not, all it will take is a council ranger to look at him from a distance, declare him as 'looking' dangerous and he can be euthanised without question as the breed is high up on the 'dangerous dogs register' as on a couple of months ago.

We had a disaster yesterday morning, my fiance panicked as a long legged bug like creature managed to fall on her arm as she opened the back door, she screamed and hid and threw things at it to get it to leave the house.
Marshall ran away from it.
We had a rabbit from Neighbours across the road the used to come into the yard and rub noses with Marshall.
