Murray's looks great but wasn't available when I first got the wagon so I mounted one of these.

The reason they're not on the website is, being a one man operation, I have to prioritise which products I spend time on and the bonnet mounted wheel carriers are not near the top of the list.
Also, depending on your state regulations, it's probably not allowed to have a spare on the bonnet on a car which didn't come with the option from factory.
I'm not sure when the bonnets changed, but the TD5 bonnets that I've seen have no steel bracing on the underside in the middle area where a wheel mount would go (same for Puma). I think late Tdi bonnets were the same, but earlier bonnets had steel bracing running from front to back so had a lot more strength, not just sheet metal.
I made one for the Puma and one for the TD5, but the owners were well informed of the possible compliance problem.

    Cheers, Murray

This is the one on the Puma, it has flat cross braces to keep the wheel as close to the bonnet hump as possible. The threaded bar in the middle sits quite high because the owner preferred the face of the wheel on top for a neater look and didn't intend to take the wheel off.

This is the one on the TD5, it's a neater looking frame with tubed cross braces. This owner intended to remove the wheel between trips, so we faced the wheel down to keep the threaded rod short. The two bolts at the front go through a steel cross brace under the bonnet.

Biggest problem is checking the oil etc. It now takes 2 people as when you pull the release you need someone at the front to lift the bonnet otherwise when you let go of the bonnet release the bonnet stays locked as there is too much weight for the bonnet to pop up on it's own.

He is now looking at a swing out rear mount spare tyre holder.

    OK, now I understand

I was looking at putting my spare on the bonnet but after sitting it up for a try even without bar work you nearly need a periscope to see over it as the bonnet sit a bit higher than my old s3 did ...still looking for ideas

That's a good idea. My car is getting Roadworthy rework so ill do it as soon as it gets back.
I'm about 6' how tall are you. This would make a bit of a difference.

I think everyone who throws a spare on the bonnet shares your concerns initially.
    I sure did..
After a few hundred kms into a trip, you forget it's even there. Honest!

    Cheers,
    Tod.
