If your only going to do 10,000kms a year the cost of going from petrol V8 to diesel will take 10 years plus to recover.
If your hearts set on a rrc just get a 90-94 and do it up. Instead of a 300 tdi have a far cheaper v8 spare to replace the original if it plays up. There is a done up D2 in the markets with a 4.6 v8 in WA for 16k which could be close to the end cost of a rrc-300tdi conversion.
Put a cargo barrier behind the seats in all 3 options(rrc, disco,1,2) so you can pack higher.
Also I know you don't like electronics but another option could be LPG with direct injection. We had this on our old prado and it was so much better than the old system. It injects LPG directly into each cylinder so you don't ever get a backfire in the intake, it uses less gas- on petrol it was 13_14, LPG was 14.5-15.5, and the power was identical. Compared to our earlier prado and another Holden it was ideal. The older prado did 13_14 on petrol and 18+ on gas.(all figures are per hundred kms) and was down on power on gas. The other thing is with the LPG injection there is way less smell of gas.

A D1 will have about the same cargo space behind the rear seats as a 88 RR - they are basically the same car.

So if the RR suits then the D1 would also suit. I would go with Ron's suggestion - go a good D2 TD5 - a little electronics but not too much to worry about.

Unless you want to pay someone to do it and the associated costs - if you are having trouble getting out of your current car then you will have trouble doing an engine conversion on a RR.

Gas it is expensive in Tasmania and not available every where. Conversion it is expensive and the gas tank take too much room.
Your point about recovering the cost of the conversion it is valid.
The problem it is that chances are that once I start going camping again the average will be 15000 km or more a year if I cross the pond.
The final cost will depends for what I can get a RR in very good condition (from time to time here in Tasmania $4000) and if I can get a Disco in the same conditions. After recondition the engine in the Disco, if the final figure it is considerable cheaper that the RR converted then the Disco will be considered.
So far the Discos that I have seen are well used nad not clean inside

That one's been around town for a few years. Funny it's advertised as a Volvo when in reality it's a rebodied International Scout. He's dreaming though.

Maybe something like this will suit perfectly. Lowish kays, cheap to buy and reasonably cheap to run, reliable but has electronics which like the car itself are reliable.

Comfy seats are also at backside height so just turn around and sit. Plenty of genuine four wheel drive ability and heaps of cargo room - the third row of seats can be removed.
