That argument only holds for the cyclists who don't themselves also own cars. Many do. Many also register more than one car but for whatever reason choose to ride occasionally instead. And I guarantee the last thing a cyclist is thinking when they go out for a ride is "hey, let's go out and bugger up Pat from using his fully paid-up space on the road."

I believe cars should be fitted with TWO horns. The existing loud warning horn, and a quieter courtesy horn, perhaps like an old claxon, that can be used to politely alert riders and pedestrians (road users who aren't cocooned in a low NVH vehicle cabin and can't hear well). It might go a long way to reducing the agro when car users need to alert riders that they are coming up from behind on a narrow stretch and all they have is a pants ****ting air horn that basically translates to "**** off out of my way".

Did you read the report that showed in 60% of incidents cyclist where at fault in Oz? Again cyclist rego and specific targeted training for our underfunded roads would reduce deaths just as specific training for motorbikes has done here and specialist driver training in certain eu countries has done there.

Actually it's other taxes that pay for the roads NOT rego. We ALL pay for the roads - even if you only ever walk. Look it up.

This whole thread is beyond a joke. There is nothing more to be achieved here.

1. Cyclists will never be registered as it is uneconomical to enforce. If you've ever worked in any kind of enforcement you will understand this. Everyone needs to get over it.

2. The argument that a Curtin Uni Professor made in The West Australian Newspaper today that bullbars should be banned in the city is also ridiculous and that also will never happen because it too is impractical and uneconomical to enforce.

Now I've had enough of this nonsense. Going to spend some quality time with my Defender instead.

BTW this thread has over 360 pages to go to catch up with the Moron motorists #3 thread over on BNA and that commenced in Oct 2012.

Maybe some of the haters should pop on over there and get a taste of what it is like to be a cyclist. They may also learn the meaning of SMIDSY which is the standard excuse.

Mate,I don't have any problem with cyclists except when they don't follow the rules,I do not make third lanes,drive on the footpath,weave in and out of traffic and have a chip on my shoulder when driving,when have you ever heard a cyclist or biker ever take responsibility for their actions and ever put their hand up and say they were at fault?,never,when was the last time you saw one of them do one of the example's I mentioned above?,everyday,enough said by me. There is a scientific explanation for your failure to see the cyclist.

A couple of times recently, a TV show has been broadcast which demonstrates that it is very hard for us to see something that we don't expect to see.

The studio audience and the TV viewers were told to watch a film of two teams throwing a basketball around. They were told to count how many times the red team held the ball and how many times the blue team held it.

When the short film ended, the audience had generally done quite a good job of counting what they had been asked to count. They were then asked if they had noticed anything else in the film.

Almost no-one had noticed that there was someone in a gorilla suit wandering in plain view amongst the players. I didn't notice it either. When the film was replayed, the gorilla was so obvious that it was difficult to believe that it hadn't been seen on the first viewing.

The explanation given was that we were not looking for a gorilla; we were following the ball, so the presence of the gorilla didn't register on our brains.

You were looking for cars, trucks or buses coming so you didn't see the cyclist. The dark clothes would not have helped, but the research seems to show that motorists' brains are programmed to look for cars, so they simply don't see cyclists.

Until our brains are rewired, there will be incidents like the one you described, even with the most vigilant drivers.

the same applies for motorcyclists.
when i went to hospital after being cleaned up by a car, the guy said he didnt see me. im am 99% sure he didnt see me because he didnt expect to see me.

So why don't cyclists want to pay for it?

The argument that the cyclist has a car so should not pay cyclist rego holds zero water as it's the same as any person who owns a car and motorbike, 2 cars, a car and delivery truck/ute etc.

The crap about motorised vehicles not paying for roads has already been shown to be a lie as FUEL TAX covers the cost of the roads (10c out of 38c taxed)with over 70% of that revenue going ELSEWHERE read nrma link in my previous post or put up anything that shows NRMA are telling porkies;)

Finally witha foreign study showing the differences in cyclists at fault in accidents between certain eu countries running at 20-40% and us running at 60% it's pretty obvious that a far larger section of the cyclists are ignoring the rules and antagonising other road users.
