But if the truck overtook the cyclist then turned in front of them they were the ones that failed to give way. My wife was hit by a car who tried this maneuver and the driver was found to be in the wrong.Quote:

Almost home from my ride today and a twerp in a Hyundai was very reluctant to give way to the right (me) and almost rammed me as I rode through the roundabout from his right ...I looked him dead in the eye and pointed at him and he reluctantly waited, but squealed his tyres through the roundabout the nanosecond I passed his front bumper! He's lucky he stopped or he would be in the lockup right now and I'd be in hospital or worse.
Something similar occurs on almost every ride. This is not a small problem.
The number of drivers who hate giving way to cyclists is ridiculous. I have no sympathy for their lost nanoseconds. There is absolutely no excuse for not giving way to a cyclist.

Trucks do this all the time. On occasion I ride past a courier place going uphill. The trucks overtake me then turn left in front of me. I'm going uphill but if I don't back off I'd end up under the truck as they haven't completed the turn. In that situation as they know they are going to turn 50m down the road they should wait behind me.

Always two sides to all yarns. The need to be able to stop to avoid running up the clacker of cars, trucks, bikes, pedestrians or even our our dear Landys is not optional, its the law. Laws about overtaking are not exempted by the transport method any of us happen to be in while being overtaken either.
Understanding is required both ways. Nice idea to swap seats for a bit. Lots of Truckies ride and run as well.
Correct, there is always two sides to a story, but, there are a few things that cyclists could do to help their cause..... The first is to start using the dedicated cycle paths that the tax payer has spent thousands of dollars on, instead of placing yourself between the newly erected Armco (that's been erected to protect those using the cycle path) and the truck that is now having to cross a white line illegally to avoid you, or try and stop because there is something coming the other way. The second thing cyclists could do is realise that traveling in a group of 4 taking up the space/footprint of a car because it is "safer" is NOT safe!!! A truck traveling at 80/100kmh does not stop quickly. If you are in a car you have a metal cage surrounding you, and can be seen clearly!! you are also traveling at highway speed and not 4 to 10 kmh! Having to choose between 4 cyclists and oncoming traffic when you are trying to stop 40 tonnes and decide what to do is not nice (and its unfair to ask/force truck drivers to do that daily).. If you ride in a line then you at least give a vehicle driver room to act. Yes, I know that its close but close is better than death. I have a friend who is an avid cyclist, and we used to have lots of arguments about this.. It wasn't until she sat beside me in the front left seat of a responding fire truck (that I was driving) that she realised what I meant. It scared the hell out of her, but she realised very quickly what decision I would have to make when faced with a group of slow moving exposed humans in front of me, and a vehicle coming the other way...
If I drive my compact tractor on the medium strip in front of my property to mow the lawn, or verge, it HAS to be registered. If I ride my motorbike/ATV to my block 500m away, it HAS to be registered.. As a vehicle on the road (taking up a car space as some do) it is only fair that bicycles be registered. A small fee of $50 a yr, that goes to maintaining cycle paths, and advertising to help cyclists and vehicles work together is not a big ask. So, come on guys. Wake up to the fact that you are not protected on your bike, you do not own the road, and vehicle drivers are not all idiots. Yes, a lot are.. Granted, but it does seem that there are now a much larger number of 'hero' cyclists who have their rear mounted camera and measuring stick/tape who are now serving to annoy the hell out of the police by reporting every car that happens to pass them a little too close!
