Last week, I was at a fellow amateur radio operator's place helping to put up an antenna system. That's not special but the ham is. He controls everything with his chin and/or a pen in his mouth.

He's a quad and he became one after being hit by a car whilst he was riding his bicycle. It reminded me of just how vulnerable we cyclists are - although in my case it's motorcyclist.

Riding is dangerous. On a BMW K100RS ( Nice bike) in Sydney I went down while waiting between two cars in a long line of stationary traffic near Bondi Junction. Many of my mates are dead, quadriplegic or paraplegic. It was some times there own riding but often like my own experience totally due to a person in a car not seeing what was right in front of them ( she was at a stop sign when she thought she could squeeze over the top of me between two stopped cars

Road rules affect horse riders, walkers, runners, bike and even cars and trucks Common sense in not killing people while driving is unusually unlike 'common sense very common. Most Drivers are great thank you to them. Those with extremist views who feel they can kill people as they are in front of them, in there way and god forbid rudely them obey road rules in not running up the clacker of bikes are like religious extremists to be avoided at all costs Respect and consideration is required by riders and everyone.

A week ago we nearly saw a lycralist on the front of a "P" platers little Toyota Seca.
On a 100 kph country road this bozo decided to stop & take a helmet Gopro shot of a dead snake on the road. He had just stopped, straddling the pushy, about a metre onto the bitumen.
This was just over the top of a sharp crest on a hill. Being in the Disco the wifey & I got to see him a bit earlier than if in a conventional vehicle so, luckily, with no oncoming traffic, I had time to indicate & move fully into the right hand lane so the poor young bloke behind us could see what was going on. He wasn't tailgating either.
Had there been traffic coming the other way I reckon I would have nearly had to hit the bike or, if I didn't, the young bloke behind would have.
I reckon the poor young bloke still got a fright! A good lesson for him anyway as the roads around this area are full of bike people full of themselves.
Not all cyclists, mind you. There are two or three I see regularly who obviously commute & we're on "waving" terms but, gee the weekend really brings the knobs out.

I don't know the law in this regard, can Marshal's direct traffic?
Or do they get a permit of some sort authorising them.
Reminds me of that wedding in Sydney where they decided to close a road and direct traffic without the permits, just bluff and going the heavy

My understanding, like at Road Works it had to be Police or designated officers.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Clancy's gone to Queensland Rovering, and we don't know where he are

In South Australia at least, traffic marshalls do a police run training course to get approved.

In NSW Traffic Controllers have to be Authorised.

The training is provided by private training providers Traffic control training - Partners & suppliers - Business & Industry - Roads and Maritime Services

The Council of Motoring Clubs NSW even had to have volunteers trained and authorised for them to be able to direct traffic into their annual car show. The Eastern Creek Classic car Show.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Yes it would need to be authorised, usually marshals supported by police.

And when they lose their car license (if they have one), they can still ride their bicycle. That is one reason why there should be bicycle license. When they lose it, they can't ride.
I would love to be able to continue to drive once the license is canceled.
