I see no reason why privately owned car parks should offer free bicycle parking. It makes sense to charge for the parking in line with how much space a bike takes up. If I owned the carpark, I wouldn't, but yes, charging for the size would make sence as long as the Melbourne City Council don't get involved like they do with car parking. At the moment, the current charge to a carpark owner is around $5,000 per annum by the council. I can just see them wanting to get in on a bike rack scheme where they charge all owners of bike racks a fixed fee each year...

Unlike private car park operators, councils have a vested interest in offering free bicycle parking. More bikes = less cars (theoretically) = less wear and tear on expensive road infrastructure.

Who would have guessed it .... The accidents statistic say it's the lycra set on fancy brand name bikes are the ones that are getting hurt on the roads ..................... Maybe they need better invincibility costumes

You would think it would be kids and young adults right ?? no ... it's the lycra wearing middle aged men forcing there way onto roads where bikes simply shouldn't be as it's too dangerous

the issue that I have with some of the comments in this thread is that they reflect an underlying "entitlement" train of thought & this, promoted by a large number of motorists leads to an "I dont give a rats rear end" attitiude that invariably leads to confrontation at the least & death at the worst.

Would you close shave your Dad? your mum? your son or daughter just because you feel that they have no right to occupy "your" road, knowing that to do so may cause their death or serious injury - just to 'teach them a a lesson"? or to accentuate the fact that you (think you) are more entitled to be on the road than they are?

Seriously folks! for the most part, you might lose 30 seconds if you wait until it is safe to pass, on the odd occasion you might get held up longer -but any more than being stuck behind a Semi on a single lane road going up a hill or a grey nomad hauling a van / horse float / boat or a stop/ go controller at road works?

It's just easy to beat up on a cyclist because they are not protected by a steel shell & are far more prone to injury or death even if your vehicle doesnt actually touch them. Even if you are brave enough to risk potentially causing someones death, in (on) your motorbike / car / truck / bus, you can probably out run them & not have to confront them face to face anyway - that way you can laugh it off & be brave about it - right?

Sure, I get cranky when I see a cyclist shoot a red light - just like I do when I see a car or a bus / truck do the same thing.

I get jealous & slightly cranky when I see a motorcyle filter when I am stuck in traffic - because I feel "hard done by" I get cranky when I see people drive their cars in the bus lanes & transit lanes, because they feel they are more important than everyone else..........people will break rules, but I have enough brains not to advocate killing or injuring people, because my perceived "entitlement" has been dented in some way. Deep down I understand that there is no real "entitlement" - it's actually privelege!

My parents and kids would never be stupid enough to put themselves in such a position of extreme danger in the first place. When I am riding my bike, I wouldn't even dream, not in a million years of putting myself in traffic (or country roads) where the costume wearers do. Talk about natural selection at work.

Lets hope buying brand name tinnies and fishing in busy shipping lanes never becomes fashionable The lycra wearers will be there in a heartbeat playing chicken with cargo ships screaming about I HAVE THE RIGHT.

Motorcycles are fine in traffic. There isnt' the speed differential. They can sit in the middle of the lane and not get over-taken.

All the laws can be made you like. The fact is, where something small, easily hidden, slow and very fragile is mixed in with cars. They are going to get spattered eventually. Heavy traffic is no place for a bicycle rider.

We can't trust the big heavy cars that weigh about 1.5tons ... are big and very visible not crash into each other ... What hope does an easily hidden cyclist have
