No they are different, the Defender is my baby, the missus cant drive it, I love it to bits. It is rough round the edges so to speak, but I would not change a thing, it is so wrong it is right. Hard to explain, but most here will know what I mean. The Mahindra is like a Landy but you are right better in a lot of points, but we all love those Landy faults, it is part of the charm IMO.
But take it down to the bare bones the Mahindra is a very good car indeed. Will it be still around in 20 years? I dont know. Will the Mahinda still have parts and general following? Again I dont know, but as a 4x4 judged on what it is the Mahindra is a very good car.

A very interesting perspective! Correct me if I'm misreading you? ...The best points of Defender for you are its failings? You love the faults of Defender and that's what makes it better than Mahindra? Fascinating. Charm outweighs quality?

Chris thanks for a very interesting thread. Just out of curiosity, I tow a 3.2 ton van with my chipped td5 130 Defender, not fast but we have covered 45000 Ks. How do you feel the Mahinda would pull these sort of weights.and could you tell us what its carrying and towing ratings are.

That would be heavy for a standard Mahindra IMO, posibly over the towing capacity, I need to check. The Mahindra can be chipped though, it costs a couple of grand from memory and it gives the Mahindra 30% more power so it ups the Mahinda to 117kw and 380nm which is good. Stock standard it does not feel any different towing with my Defender which is a Puma motor one. Not sure what my van weighs but it is loaded up a lot, I will check the weight tomorrow.

You are misreading me and probably reading too much into this thread. The Defender will never be sold I love it, it is an icon, its flaws are part of its charm which is why the new Defender if it ever gets made wont be a Defender, not really.. The Mahinda is a great car which does much of what the Defender can d for far far less money, but it is not a Defender, it wont be worth what you paid for it in 20 years time. You probably wont bother fixing it either (actually I might if I cant get anythng as simple when that time comes) when it get old unlike the Defender which has a huge parts supply. All that said the Mahindra is a really good car, I like owning both, I love bouncing along trying to find a place for my right arm in my Defender and I like crusing along in the Mahindra in relative comfort.
They both are what they are, and the Mahindra is IMO as close as anything to a Defender ie a simple 4x4 right now and they are cheap and seemingly realible. That is all I am not bashing Defenders, remember I own a Defender and I do love it, but I love the Mahindra too.

Next question Chris: Do they come in Indus Silver?
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.

Ungainly looking, but a little less so with mods. Might be a pragmatic choice... But a new Defender anything like this would be a backward step IMO.
What do you reckon Chris? https://d37nk263jfz2p8.cloudfront.ne...afdb518789.jpg

These are only available in India and are not close to a Defender. They are good off road I am told but otherwise nothing special. The Pik up is a usable car and very good off road, another thing.
