    Okay who took it?

    Thought I would celebrate the labour day long weekend by replacing the springs on the rangie to get it back to standard height so I can more easily hook the van up to it...

    Pulled the drivers side shock tower out and undid the nut retaining the shock and dropped it off to the sound of one of the washers hitting the deck....

    An hour later I still haven't found the thing

    And quess who had a clean out of all that sort of crap a few weeks ago

    Not a happy chap ......

    It's amazing how far a dropped washer can travel.
    Look in the most inaccessible part of the garage. Or even outside.

    Long term solution, never throw anything out.

    My contraption for this very conundrum is a neodymium magnet that I pulled out of an old hard drive platter.
    Stick it to a stick / long screwdriver and use it like a wand to sweep the ground where it might have landed.

    Reminds me of an accident investigation many years ag about a fatal helicopter crash on an offshore production platform in Bass Strait. Cause of the accident was an out of balance tail rotor. The missing washer was found (eventually) in a crack in the floorboards of the workshop where the rotor had been overhauled.

    Also reminds me of my first experience at overhauling a brake master cylinder in my student days (off my 1955 VW). Up until then, I did not realise they had a spring in them..... took two days to find the bits.

    Know the feeling well

    Only last week I was reassembling Lady P's centre ashtray and one of the lid springs went ping and flew to ground. Found it an hour later wedged between desk and bookshelf!

    I do like your magnet idea toxic. I have a couple of old hdds so will make one up next time.

    I added an HDD magnet to my auto sump as an extra filings magnet
    I was scrambling to fix a leak on my fpr literally in the hour leading up to its rego inspection, I took more time trying to find the bloody bolt I dropped than I did on the fpr. Had wedged itself in the yoke of the uni joint!

    SWMBO had dropped her special fine needle near the camp fire on rough ground.

    Catastrophe!

    Pulled a speaker out of the rear shelf of the car, wrapped it in a plastic bag, waved it around on the dirt - Bingo!

    Easiest brownie points I ever earned.
