No "Smelling Salts" needed at all, Criminals need to be held accountable for thier actions and Not slapped with a feather duster.
Too many crims are using/abusing the system and many are literally getting away with Murder.
Yes i agree that we will Never get rid of the criminal element in society But we can at least keep the ones we catch off the streets with meaningful sentances instead of the revolving door system we have now.
You only get one shot at life, Aim well

We are soft touches and the crims know it the criminal system should be federal and things like murder, rape and child crimes should have life the judge has no leeway and life means you die in prison. Being federal means if you commit a crime you could go to any prison in Australia maybe then the low life of society may think before doing there ****. Prisons need to be a lot less comfy and if they wish to play up there then the guard's need the freedom to make life miserable for them.

Unfortunately the 'do gooder brigade' rule. NZ for example, has had a '3 strike' Law for the past few years. Certain serious offences attract a 'strike', where you lose bail privileges, or parole privileges etc, if you keep offending. They now intend to repeal that act due to a change of govt etc.

NZ is currently 'wringing it's hands' over the explosion in prisoner numbers over the past few years(some stats point to that increase as mainly gang members locked up...which....is that a bad thing?). As someone who has been involved in law, I say, build the gaols and they shall come...keep building...

its not the construction side im worried about.
its the cost of housing them.

i read an article somewhere, each prisoner costs about $300 a day.

Australia’s prisoners each cost an average of $292 per day
It costs $110,000 to imprison someone for a year in this country

But some think that the prison labour will be able to subsidise this cost , and as some think they should be a for profit entities.

That's cheap insurance against a loved one getting hurt or murdered......

Take away some of the luxuries. Ooops there I go again...now I will upset the 'prison is the punishment, they don't go to prison to be further punished' brigade.

Who here making comments has spent time in prisons? I have for the last 28 years (including Boggo Road and various others throughout Qld). They are crowded awful places with very little of what we take for granted. Want to wash your clothes? Try arranging that with 50 plus others using 1 machine. Want to microwave a snack...try sharing the 1 microwave with 50 plus others. This isnt max sec either. The costs. The costs are very largely the wages and infrastructure involved in keeping them in.

It's not just the crowding it's the feel of oppression once you are on the secure side that really hits you. It's no picnic people. Don't believe the press and populist word of mouth. The truth is that justice should follow convicts into prison. But there are no votes in looking after the basics for prisoners. It's not sexy.

Don't forget your 17 year old son or daughter could inadvertently kill someone driving a car and be locked up in crowded conditions (prisons with far more people than designed for) with hardened types and be subject to all that entails.
