An eight week suspension is not even a slap on the wrist. If he escapes criminal charges over this matter he should be suspended for the rest of this season plus all of next year.

Think back to 1983 when Les Boyd bashed Darrel Brohman and broke his jaw. He was suspended for 12 months. Brohman later sued Boyd and was settled out of court for a sum believed over $100,000 In 1984 Boyd lashed out again at Billy Johnstone and was suspended for 15 months.
When i was a kid it was different. Nothing wrong with a good old donnybrook. Even in footy.

Not necessarily. Boys will be boys.
I have never been able to fight my way out of a paper bag, and at my age that sort of stuff is well & truly behind me, not that I was ever particularly keen on it anyway.
BUT, there have been times, a long time ago, when I couldn't avoid it.
As a 14 y.o. English boy (Pommy Bastard I was called!) entering my first school in Qld in the late 50s, I was forced to fight, people today would call it "bullying", "being picked on" ra ra ra. I never looked at it like that, neither I think did my protagonists. So, initially I was in quite a bit of fisticuffs, pretty hopeless at it, but so were the other guys,.....consequence, a few bruises, black eyes etc, but INVARIABLY, we all ended up mates,...for years after. The main thing was to stick up for oneself'.
However, it seems to me that there may be a difference today, fighting seems to be more "vicious",..kicking, hitting while you're down,...we never did any of that,....just a fair bit of good old fisticuffs, when it was important to simply stick up for yourself.

Agree, when i was a kid i did not mind a fight. But there was a code of ethics to the fight.
NEVER kicking while down or head stomping. Actually i personally never kicked in a street fight despite being taught to fight and knowing how to kick.
That stuff was just not allowed. Thats for self defense not boys having a donnybrook. The other boys would jump in for that. If i would have seen a mate do that i would have slapped him for it! Frowned upon.
Have your fight but when its over its over. The other boys step in and separate. Then the most important part. They were required to say "we done". If "Yes" then shake of hands and nothing more said of it. If "No" then thats round 2.
A one on one fight i applied the same ethics. I have had fights where we are drinking with each other not long after the fight.
Took one guy to hospital in my car after breaking his collar bone in a fight.
Hell last time i had a fight was about 6 months ago. Had someone try Tazer me actually. I knocked him down and gave him a couple in the back of the head. No kicks. Let him get up and leave.
Took the tazer and his beer though

The code of ethics no longer exists sadly.

Big difference now is that because of weights and steroids people are big and punching with real force - exacerbated by king hits because you don't have a change to brace or duck.

Weights and Steriods have been around forever. Always been a problem but i dont suspect its the typical meat head type bloke doing most king hits.
The hit from behind used to be a cowards attack, now days coward means a completely different thing. At times i question how people even use the word!

I hate to say it but i think Cage Fighting has something to do with it also.
I remember when i was a kid Bruce Lee was it. People sort of tried to fight like him in the streets. Did things like Kung Fu and Karate.
Now days the favorite fighter is nearly always a cage fighter where kicks and knees are the norm. So its reasonable to think people try fight like there heroes/inspirations.
I LOVE CAGE FIGHTING!!! But i think it has a side effect. Desensatising a generation to a new level of violence.

    In Victoria, it continues.
Woman who kills three of her children has her sentence massively reduced.
    ........Why?
THREE human beings that have NO LIFE thanks to you,.....BITCH.

    Mental condition yes!

Imagine you go to the docs and get some meds for a bad headache. No big deal right.
Lets say for the point of argument these pills send you loopy and you have no idea or recollection of what your doing and during that period you do something like above.

Or lets say your a schizophrenic and you have a med change, a month later you have an episode and do something bad.

These sort of possible situations have to be looked at on there merit.

To simply say Murder is Murder.... Meh thats a little nieve.

Thankfully we have judges who adjudicate these cases and not the public vocal minorities or we would have mass hangings.
