Yep and if you've ever been in that situation, once you're out of it you never forget and every day are eternally grateful for the job and life you do have.

Any assistance that was given over that period of time has been more than paid back in taxes since.

And skills gained in economic management have enabled the purchases of Land Rovers

Ahh yes the foreign student. My expierence with them is they are sent here by the bank of mum and dad to study, never had a job so decide to go do a manual labour job, so far in life anything harder than playing video games is hard work, so now they are fruit picking , which I can only assume is performance based like commercial fishing- don't catch don't make any money , don't pick much fruit don't make much money.

So they worked but made no money , I know let's tell our story to anyone who will listen, most people hear the worked 8-10-12 hours and made nothing and then start to push their cause . Thing is unless you have worked in that type of structure ,then it's a very hard concept to fathom.

The media love it as it sell papers or attracts viewers .

As I have said before , the rogue traders need the full force of the law thrown at them, but in my expierence its a 2 way street that the majority of people don't understand because they think 1hrs labour = X amount of $$ , but in those types of work you throw that concept out the window.

    Cheers Ean

I know a few Grey Nomads that fruit pick for funds...
They tell me it's pretty good and pays ok if you're actually willing to *work*...

$10 an hour cash in hand minus accommodation, electricity and food doesn't leave much.

Not sure about where you are but 100% of the back packers that ask me to pay them cash are people who don't have a working visa , and most of them offer to work for less than what you normally pay . This is most likely where the problem lay's - offer that to the wrong operators and it would be easy to rob them blind. So I wonder who you would blame in that - The person who is trying to work illegally or the operator who robs them.??

When you deal with employing backpackers you would be surprised at what you get offered to give them extra work days to go towards their second year visa , or even more so to sponser them for work so they get their residency visa after 4 yrs.

just something from the other side of the poor me backpackers that they may fail to mention when they tell you how hard they are being done by.

    Cheers Ean

Just finishing the grain season in northern NSW. 2 months work, averaged over 2k per week, with a few 18 to 23 hour days. Heat, dust and flies were no extra charge, accommodation was thrown in, byo food, but sometimes the bosses missus would bring tucker out to the paddock if it was busy. One Canadian backpacker driving a header (top young fella, came off a farm in Alberta) one aboriginal bloke, and myself. Others were all full-time employees of the place.
Hard work, hell yes. Would I do it again, hell yes.
Most of the backpackers that worked for Graincorp weren't worth feeding, let alone paying. Lazy, dangerously stupid and wedded to their phones.

Good to hear the "other side" of things from people who've "been there" & who are actually, "on the coalface".

    Rofl,
An article by NEWS CORP! About welfare recipients ripping the system of by not holding a job for 12 months, yet their "tax return " that was not appealed in 2014 would have PAID every single one of those 35,000 welfare "bludgers" ,as Rupert likes to label them , $25,000 per head!
Backpackers used to pay the same tax as us as they went over each $$$ increments now they will pay extra. Or as Ean said scam extra and do locals out of work as who do you hire , the Ozzie on $18 or the tourist on $10-12 under the table?

    Nothing new.

When I went to Wa in 1995. I lived in a backpackers for 18 Months on an off as I was doinging Field work. Became night manager now that is a differnt disscusion. A lot of them use to go down to Albany etc to pick fruit when they came back they had just covered costs. I hired a car and went down with a few, it was a rip off. I was lucky I worked for well paying jobs. In 1998 I was paid $200 a day no expensives and I did 18 weeks straight 7 days a week min 12 hours some times 15. Thats right. 18 weeks. It is still a record in that company but I loved the work. We are all different but to be abused and ripped of is a game changer. Some people need more help than others.
