"Why not"? Blindingly obvious why not, our weak useless pollies are afraid of being called racist and upsetting the UN and other totally worthless organisations screaming about the "rights".
AlanH.
"Welfare"?...Yep, plenty are on it.....and yes, I've said the present levels, which are increasing, are unsustainable....said it plenty of times.
And one very good reason why they will be "unsustainable" is plastered all over the front of the Melbourne Sun today.
Muslims are claiming multiple benefits, in all aspects of welfare, for multiple brides, & multiple children from those brides, and unbelievably, although Centrelink are aware of this, they are doing nothing about it?
My question is, "Why Not"?
Pickles.

Sounds like another News beatup intended to cause outrage because it fits with the prejudices of certain people. As Australians they have exactly the same entitlements as other Australians. Besides, the Muslims I know are all working.

Welfare is seen as a right in this country, not a privilege and until this culture changes or is changed by the political parties nothing will change.
The people who work and pay tax will complain because they will continue to pay more and the people on welfare will continue to see it as their right because its how it has been allowed to be.
Look at the last sitting of parliament, 3 days argueing over what tax we should charge backpackers - are you for real. Straight away they just killed of any local people doing that job alongside backpackers because they are getting charged more tax to do the same job as the backpacker beside them. So we not only lost 1 job to a foreign worker , we stopped another local from working because they are getting the raw deal from their own countries tax system.
Last I heard we had unemployment and under employment , so why is it that healthy able bodied people can still claim when farmers are saying their crops are spoiling because no one can pick them. I am not talking about making people move from 1 side of the country to the other, but what about within say a 30 mile radius of that area - how many unemployed and long term unemployed live in that immediate area, why are they not working on these farms ??
This type of approach will do 2 things , it will sort out who is serious about working and it will sort out the scrupulous work places. Sure there are legit reasons for not being able to work and that's fine but just because you want to be a super model and not get out of bed for under a grand a week , don't expect the tax payer to continue to fund your dreams.
Every politician needs to stop trying to win popularity votes and start doing their job.
Just my view of course.

Like every other industry , I bet the farmers are not likely to take on wave after wave of inexperienced workers. When travelling about most farm work was organised by labour hire. Once you got in you were right , but like anywhere else you needed that first go .
Really? Only Muslims are claiming - do you seriously believe that?
Also, fruitpickers travel a lot longer than 30 miles to get work. Many of them then get paid illegally low wages and overcharged for food and accommodation.
Foreign students only put up with it because they have no choice under the visa rules - either they do it or they get deported. If they complain they get sacked.
The conditions are so bad that Aussies won't put up with them. Basically, for foreign students, fruitpicking is forced labour.

Sorry Mick but get out in the real world. I deal with a backpacker labour force weekly, The whole reason they do it is to gain the days for their second visa, and whilst on the farms they spend no money so they can afford to travel for the second year.
The reason they do it is because they come from countries that don't offer the dole and have rediculessly high unemployment due to europes open boarder policy.
You can be picky about what I said with how far people travel to work but the current system don't work , and its unaffordable.
Cheers Ean
I can't comment on your situation.
My comments reflect what I've been told by overseas students who have gone fruitpicking plus reports from various investigations.

The rate at which the backpacker fruitpickers I know are paid wouldn't stand up as a 'job' for anyone else. Any tax on such miserable pay would make the system unworkable. ...So of course they will now be paid in cash. No tax anyway.
When will capitalist greed wake up to the fact that 'affordable products' exploit half the worlds populations? It's all a sham. Jobs are not being lost to anyone in this country. Unemployment at 5% suits government inflation targets as does social security.
Anyone who can actually live on the dole deserves accolades for their frugality and economic management skills.
Populist rubbish about tax payers funding welfare layabouts is actually cheaper for tax payers than increased inflation.
Too much is never enough hey.
